International Mountain Day

In 2002, the UN General Assembly designated 11 December as International Mountain Day. It is celebrated annually to create awareness about the importance of mountains to life. Here is a collage of a few of my favourite mountain photos from Ireland.

This day last year I visited the Commissioners of Irish Lights Head Office in Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin, and got to see one of my own Sturgeon Moon photos - taken during a moonrise from Carlingford Lough near Haulbowline Lighthouse - enlarged and displayed on their wall. I was absolutely blown away.

Laytown Beach was lovely this morning for sunrise. Looked like a lot of low lying cloud but the sun did manage to break through it. Notnor be outdone the moon was also shining brightly. Linda Brunker’s fabulous ‘Voyager’ sculpture made for a lovely subject.

Memories from #thisdaylastyear — the sky over Gyles Quay put on the most incredible show. The contrast between the dark clouds and the fiery sunset was beautiful.

And so it begins - Dublin City Council’s Winter Lights featuring the ‘Céad’ installation at George’s Dock - 100 beams of light in the sky created by lighting designer Sonya Fossett and music artist Caolan Ryan. And a bit of ‘HO HO HO’ from the Samuel Beckett bridge this evening.

Beautiful sunset colours over Carlingford Lough and Omeath this evening, with the sky glowing in soft pinks, yellows, and reds, and the moon and colours reflecting beautifully across the water.

Just witnessed a beautiful sunset at Gyles Quay but before that here are some photos from a lovely start to the day in Carlingford this morning. The little robin I met was singing its heart out for ages and the morning sun was shining brightly on King John’s Castle.

Cold, grumpy, and in need of a warmer perch 😉

This robin was all fluffed up and looking fed up with winter already - spotted along the boardwalk to Portmarnock Beach this morning.

Walking in a winter wonderland

A light dusting of snow transformed the turf road above Omeath into a beautiful winter trail and added to the sweeping views over Carlingford Lough. Photos taken from a walk up to Clermont Cairn yesterday ( 20th November, 2025).

It was pretty baltic out there this morning ❄️
Beautiful pre sunrise colours were in abundance and this fishing trawler positioned just to the right of Ireland’s Eye provided a perfect sunrise object.
