I don't care about him that much as a player, but it's still wild to me Franz wasn't Eurobasket MVP. He was absolutely the MVP! All love to Dennis, but that was a sentimental MVP award, Germany lived and died with Franz.

Critics wanted something dizzying and entirely novel like RW, but no author could do that twice, and so they were disappointed. But Pilgermann is an absolute masterpiece and the language is almost as beautiful. It's like the definitive take on the problem of evil.

This is the nerdiest of all shit, but a recent insight I have into this (from recently reading the latter) is that RW and Pilgermann really need to be read together. It's so sad that Pilgermann is forgotten, because it both expands on and explains Riddley Walker in a way that's satisfying and sad.

Did Trey Lyles actually look like an NBA rotation forward after ASB when he finally had some talent around him off the bench? YES. Is it criminal this didn't impress Perry who did not develop Lyles? NO. Just another marginal gain flushed by a GM who has no obligation to care (and may be right!)
