🇬🇧We share the NFU's concern about trade deals allowing imports produced in ways banned in the UK

While the PM's assurances on food standards are welcome, we need firm guarantees that animal welfare - not just hygiene - will be protected in all trade deals

🇪🇺 Great to see the Commission introducing import standards that 'match EU welfare criteria' for companion animals. This principle must also apply to animals farmed abroad for EU consumers.

The EC committed to "alignment of standards for imported products" - it's time to make this a reality!

✅ Minimum standards for breeding, care, and housing
✅ Tightening traceability for online sales to curb illegal trade
✅ Training for animal handlers
✅ Educating buyers on responsible ownership
✅ Import standards to match EU welfare criteria

The world is turning away from fur.

Fur farming causes immense animal suffering that can’t be solved with improvements to regulation.

The EU must:
❌ Ban fur farming for all fur-bearing species
❌ Ban the import of farmed fur products, no matter their origin

Only EU slaughter rules apply to animal products imported into the EU. That means EU shoppers may unknowingly be funding cruel farming practices abroad.

🇪🇺 It’s time to raise the bar: require EU‐equivalent welfare for all imports.

🇪🇺 The EU's animal welfare laws are being revised - now is the moment to stop fuelling animal suffering abroad through imports!

A new @eurogroupforanimals.org report shows this is legally feasible and would have a significantly positive impact.
