Real Talk about getting laid off from a super famous company: I’ve been cycling in a loop between the same library of emotions. Anger, sadness, relief, optimism, calm, anxiety. Meanwhile everything you read about it is true. Lotta high performers were laidoff to meet quota.

It’s been exactly 36 hours since I was canned from Meta and I already have 3 recruiter phone screens this week with a few more in the pipeline from Hiring Managers and even got a cold-call from an Atlassian recruiter (they are the project management standard in tech).

Part 5: a big part of being a senior (aka lead) #ProductDesigner at #meta is being able to scope and manage large projects that have big impact and satisfy/promote the product and business need. I know I can do this again somewhere else, I’m just sad at the loss of potential success.

Part 4: I’m still in shock and sad and irritated that I won’t get to see my year-long project all the way through. I spent so much effort and time getting support from all areas behind it. Multiple meetings selling it and promoting it and writing proposals for it.

Part 3: these glowing reviews brought me to tears because it was the type praise I never received from anyone else there, even though we regularly had to seek peer feedback every 6 months during our review cycles.

Part 2: the most heartwarming and empathetic -was getting multiple amazing referrals on LinkedIn written by peers who gave me glowing reviews. All by engineering partners and managers and leaders, who I worked with on multiple projects designing solutions for.

Yesterday I learned that almost everyone I knew who got laid off at #meta were high performers and completely blindsided by the sudden low rating and dismissal (including me). Many have reached out to me in support and empathy which I truly appreciate! #metaLayoffs (part 1)

Part 3: I have about 13 years of experience as a product designer, with the last 3 at Meta doing large scale projects across orgs/disciplines; in Infrastructure which is a highly technical space. Before design, I have 15 years of experience as a software engineer in full stack so I can “speak nerd”.

Part 2: this comes as a big surprise to me because I had gotten amazing ratings all year, and my manager did not bring up any issues at all leading up to this point. Personally, I don’t think this is about performance, I think this was about money.
