When most queers say "afab" or "amab," they really just mean "dude" or "girl."

Someone could have been assigned female at or post birth, have testes, or ovotestes, lack a uterus, or have had initially masculine genitalia that was subsequently altered. They could have XY chromosomes, or both XX and XY chromosomal material.

When most people refer to "Amab" or "Afab," they really just mean appearing dyadic. When you look into the initial terminology in the intersex community, the lines to distinguish between the two are blurred and are more social and aesthetic.

Something funny is that intersex advocates point out that the opposite happens when someone diagnosed early and "corrected" rejects the coerced assignment. There's no winning.

From Hermaphrodite Logic, referencing two handbooks distributed by the Intersex Society of North America (ISNA) in the 00s:

Following from the earliest public arguments of the intersex movement, OII argued that the focus of intersex 'managenent' was the emotions of those challenged by intersex physiologies:

"The propaganda in this handbook repeatedly brushes aside the serious issues of transphobia and homophobia which many of us have experienced from our earliest..."

"...years and throughout life. The handbook is not about making intersexed children actually feel secure and comfortable with themselves but more about assuring the parents that their intersexed children will most likely NOT be transsexual or homosexual.
The whole reason for combining a lot of different conditions which have nothing in common medically under the umbrella term 'disorder of sex development' is not to treat real health conditions of intersexed children but to relieve the sufferings and anxieties that gender 'ambiguity' provokes within society."

For these advocates, it was adding insult to injury to have their variations rebranded as 'disorders'. OII argued that parents were told that 'DSDs' were most likely not linked to any irregularities in...

...gender identification, while doctors were issued with protocols for ensuring children's assigned sex and adult sex would align. The alternative, simply waiting to hear what children made of themselves, was spurned. Organization Intersex International argued that the framing of 'disorders of sex development' was an interlocking one with so-called 'gender identity disorder' (today largely replaced with a diagnosis of gender dysphoria):

"It is always the child who is disordered in these handbooks. If the intersex child rejects the arbitrary sex assignment, they have another disorder. What started out as a disorder of the child's sex has become a disorder of the child's gender . . . At all points of the treatment protocols, the child is always wrong and suffering from a..."

"...disorder."

In this way, 'DSDs' rearriculated longstanding clinical fears that intersex people would grow up to be homosexual. Together, these two manuals attempted to reassure parents and direct doctors in 'managing' children away from trans sexuality. Children would be subject to corrective procedures (surgical and hormonal) to minimise this new perceived risk. If they later opted to correct a wrongly assigned sex, they would be reclassified as suffering from another sinister acronym (from DAD to GID).

Miss Major Griffin-Gracy passed away today according to the House of GG. She was a veteran of the Stonewall rebellion and a lifelong organizer for the safety and dignity of trans people, sex workers, and the incarcerated. She came from the same generation and milieu as Marsha and Sylvia. She was 78.
