- Low turnout
- Vote-splitting
- Feeling like votes are being wasted
- Candidates winning with barely 30% of the votes

These issues are plaguing the current municipal election in Calgary and we could address them by making the switch to ranked ballots. #yyc #yyccc

Calgary Needs Ranked Ballots for Better Elections
We’re one week from election day, various polls are showing a very close race for mayor and people are freaking out about the low turnout so far after advance voting week.  About the only outcome y…

I was checking into a candidate forum this past week and the person at the table asked if I'm Andrew Ng, the tech guy with two million followers. Alas I am not.

Still worth the follow though, especially if you're in #Calgary and #Alberta! #yyc

Covering the disability community die in at McDougall Centre this afternoon, and one of the harrowing stories is from an AISH recipient who was offered a MAID form to die rather than being offered provincial emergency housing transition support.

An attack on one group’s human rights is an attack on all of our human rights. What the UCP has done with their anti-trans bills is gross for trans people, young girls, their families, their teachers and their coaches. It disgusts me to no end and all Albertans should feel the same. #ableg #abpoli

Her statement doesn’t say anything about forcing treatment or closing the SCS. It says “provide options and supports” - which is completely the opposite of forcing treatment.

The NDP will never appeal to the people who like these policies and they should quit trying. Those people will just always vote for the UCP. And the rest of us can smell cowardice from 100 km away.

How has the NDP not just come out and said “We’ll repeal the anti-trans bills, we won’t tell schools what books they can’t have in their libraries, and we’ll let kids figure out their path forward in whatever way they feel is safest for themselves. We’ll support them and their families.” ?? #abpoli

One lesson in this is that the Alberta NDP needs to step up their game. They were almost completely irrelevant in this entire discussion. #AbLeg #AbPoli

I suspect they discovered that many conservative voters also disagree with book bans. They also realized that school divisions were not going to interpret "sexual content" to mean only 2SLGBTQ+ content.

The Alberta government is hitting pause on its order for the removal of books with explicit sexual content from libraries.

Notably, all the examples of "explicit sexual content" the government provided were from 2SLGBTQ+ books. This suggests that their intent was to ban this content specifically and that they expected school divisions to apply the order only to certain kinds of books.

Congratulations to the Edmonton Public School Board for fighting fire with fire and proving the UCP are nothing to be feared, but truly a bunch of feckless dimwits who fold like cheap umbrellas at the slightest opposition

Now teach the ANDP how to fight

New blog post! The closing of the Eau Claire YMCA was kind of my political awakening and I really haven't gotten over it. It's where I found a community when I first moved to Calgary. Now it represents a major flaw in our society. #yyc #yyccc

NEW: Since giving NYT hacked info from a Nazi and sending a swastika push alert, Substack's extremism is in the spotlight again. An investigation finds Substack is a haven for newsletters dedicated to white supremacy—with the co-founders' blessing.

I was told by a city councillor and some city officials that the closing of the Eau Claire YMCA and the Beltine rec centre would be okay because MNP is nearby. Now MNP is going to charge for parking, all while being a massive facility that’s always packed. Sorry but it’s not a good solution. #yyc

Key point from the report, was that the province sought to take a decision making role over the fire, despite not having the jurisdictional responsibility.

The province's inquiries created political challenges and disrupted the work of incident commanders during the fire.

The rise in online influencers has been both positive and negative depending on who you’re watching. But there’s absolutely no denying there are too many online podcasts hosts who are purely malicious. They aren’t just misunderstanding major social issues. They are intentionally misleading youth.

The the boom in casual AI use can’t be ignored. It’s becoming second nature for teens to use it for research at best, and to cheat at worst. They’ll lack critical thinking and media literacy skills and that might not produce good electoral outcomes. See Brexit.

The world has changed a lot since 2019 and I think lowering the voting age in Canada has to come with changes to our education system. Ontario is still the only province that has a compulsory Civics course and of course, the quality of education varies province to province. That has to change.
andrewngyyc.bsky.social
I’ve been a long time supporter of lowering the voting age in Canada. Growing up in Ontario, it made sense to me to learn about government and voting in Grade 10 Civics (16y/o), and then get to put it to use sooner rather than wait two more years to turn 18. But…
