Final copies are here, and they're stunning. Alex Wolfe did an excellent job with the design. If I owe you a book, it'll be on its way shortly. And for the rest of y'all, the book comes out from @upittpress.bsky.social on October 21. I can't wait to share No Longer at This Address with you.

It broke my heart to write this poem, and I would give it back if I could reverse my brother's death or my mom's diagnosis. But it doesn't work like that. So I'm trying to open my hands to the joy of having a poem in @thenation.com. Thank you, Kaveh Akbar, et al.

This is the D'Angelo performance that I've never forgotten. This song was already a huge hit but the way he took it from contemporary R&B to church revival illustrated how connected those idioms are. A revelation for those who didn't know, and an affirmation for those who did.

“Life, friends, is boring.” Oh hey, it’s your old terrible book boyfriend John Berryman with “Dream Song 14,” perhaps the modern poetic apotheosis of ‘I’m in this picture and I don’t like it.” And yet.
14

Life, friends, is boring. We must not say so.
After all, the sky flashes, the great sea yearns,
we ourselves flash and yearn,
and moreover my mother told me as a boy
(repeatingly) ‘Ever to confess you're bored
means you have no

Inner Resources.' I conclude now I have no
inner resources, because I am heavy bored.
Peoples bore me,
literature bores me, especially great literature,
Henry bores me, with his plights & gripes
as bad as achilles,

who loves people and valiant art, which bores me.
And the tranquil hills, & gin, look like a drag
and somehow a dog
has taken itself & its tail considerably away
into mountains or sea or sky, leaving
behind: me, wag.

We're bringing back excerpt submissions from unpublished novels and novellas, but adding a criterion: 200 words max length.

All other prose, fiction and poetry submissions still have no length limit.

We're now accepting longform poetry in addition to prose for our fall issues! We define longform poetry as a single long poem, variations on the epic poem, or a sequential poem such as a crown of sonnets or numbered series. David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

I don't know how else to tell you this: generative AI, the dismantling of Dept of Ed, defunding science, MAHA, banned books. They're of a piece. They're trying to disenfranchise you of your brain. Keep thinking.

Bill filed in #Florida Legislature would make every single college & university name one street after Charlie Kirk. And the bill even specifies WHICH street at each one. (But the governor doesn't want streets used for political messages, which is why no rainbows!) www.tallahassee.com/story/news/l...

Hopefully the whole Bari Weiss thing and Ezra Klein thing starts waking people up to the fact that corporate media is mostly populated with mediocre people who have made millions and gained unbelievable influence because they threaten nothing and tell wealthy people exactly what they want to hear.

Wait for the contract! Nothing is final until it's in writing, and it would be unfortunate to have needlessly withdrawn one or more paid submissions before knowing for sure.
