In my younger years, architecture was an essential part of how I explored culture. Frank Gehry’s legacy has always been one of grand spectacle.

And just like that, we are entering week 50 of 2025.

The grittiness and colours of Manila were the most apt backdrop for the emotions and Filipino sensibilities brought about by ingrained patriarchal conservatism. I adore films that take me back to familiar spaces and SUNSHINE did not only tell a brave story but was also a visually rich piece of work.

Seeing Red again after 13 years, the demystification remains, but it’s Rothko’s towering self-importance that comes through so much more sharply. John Logan’s play, centred on fictional interactions between Rothko and an apprentice, is precise in its dialogue and its attack.

And we bid goodbye to our private infinity pool. That was an amazing week, Fiji.

You are not American and do not live in the USA, yet you celebrate a holiday built on myths that erase Indigenous suffering and mark the beginning of Native American dispossession.

Our time in Denarau will end tomorrow, and then we're moving to a different island. 🏖️🇫🇯

Hurt people hurt people.

This cliché is apt in the devastating series HAL & HARPER. Raiff’s approach to storytelling is reminiscent of the quirkiness of the Duplass Brothers, but with emotional depth. The delicate writing, selection of indie music and performances make this a cathartic experience.

Every dictator and authoritarian government relies on scapegoats to justify corruption, repression, and inhumane policies, using strongman rhetoric to disguise failure and concentrate power.

For an absurdist sex comedy, FLOWER GIRL works well, is witty, and has several hilarious moments, which is already an achievement in Philippine cinema. Its inclusive theme, however, falters towards the end, and if that message had been brought home more clearly, it could have been an excellent film.

Still halfway through Hal and Harper, and somehow beneath its quirkiness is something quietly devastating. It’s giving Aftersun vibes for me.

When it comes to the intensity and frequency of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, typhoons, floods, and landslides, four countries have the worst hazard profile on the planet: Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Papua New Guinea. But their ability to respond could not be more different.

Crimson Peak and Nightmare Alley may have been letdowns for me, but they were visually stunning. Guillermo del Toro is one masterful storyteller who can capture humanity in the midst of horror and monstrosities. His subtexts are refined, his imagery poetic.

Whether it’s the Creature, the Amphibian Man, or Pinocchio, Guillermo del Toro has an uncanny gift for humanising his cinematic monsters. His new Netflix adaptation of FRANKENSTEIN deepens the Freudian undercurrents of the original, tracing the cycle of creation and rejection with emotional clarity.

Every three days, a horse dies in Australia because of racing. The causes are catastrophic injuries such as broken necks, shattered limbs, or ruptured arteries. These numbers do not include unreported cases or the thousands of horses lost to training injuries and wastage each year. #NupToTheCup

Instead of participating in today's holiday which harms horses in the most inhumane ways, check this Australian documentary on SBS:

Meta-comedy and unending cameos?

Overdone.

Breaking the fourth wall?

Overdone.

Uninspired stories involving multiverses and timelines?

Overdone.

DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE is just another contribution to comic-book fatigue.
