Public policy often goes unnoticed, unless you are someone it is leaving behind. Policy change means a senior doesn't choose between medication & groceries. A family doesn't need the food bank because they earn a living wage.

Remember: There is nothing natural or inevitable about extreme inequality; it’s the result of an economic system that values wealth and power over human dignity and justice.

It doesn't have to be this way.

170,000 BC seniors live in poverty. We can donate to seniors' programs (please do), but policy change is what got seniors poverty down to 2% in the 1990s.

We've done it before. We can do it again.

For #GivingTuesday this year, numerous causes need your support. Like me, you've probably already chosen where your donations are going, but in case not, or if you have a little extra to give, consider our work. It addresses many pressing issues facing those in our province with long-term solutions.

The provincial and federal governments must act on seniors' poverty, says senior economist @iglikaivanova.bsky.social.

There must also be increased funding for housing and for seniors’ groups to support social engagement and help seniors access supports and services.
Rising poverty and economic insecurity among BC seniors
Nearly 170,000 BC seniors are living in poverty and many more have incomes only marginally above the poverty line. The poverty rate among BC seniors (15.5%) now exceeds the poverty rate of every other age group, a change since 2015. These are real people who are forced to choose between grocerie

Instead of restraint we can have an economy that works for everyone: full-time work delivers financial stability, families can afford to live where they work and no one has to choose between buying groceries or heating their home say the 2025 Living Wage report authors.
Despite intensifying trade tensions, BC’s low-wage workers can’t be forgotten
While governments grapple with intensifying trade tensions, the daily struggles of over 700,000 low-wage British Columbians whose paycheques don’t cover the cost of living in their communities often go unnoticed.
