Because of the canal and Greater London being slightly bigger. Alton is apart of this area. It has the name of "Farnborough/Aldershot/Alton built-up area.".

An interesting article which shows how my small town might have been transformed by the then transformative world of canal building. Incidentally for this’s reading, the Swan Pub which is mentioned, still exists today!
The Basingstoke canal would still exist although serving Darkhaven. It also gives me an excuse why Alton, Alresford and Farnham to an extent is bigger. It would connect thru Winchester into Southampton. As of 2025, it's still navigable. Same with the Basingstoke Canal.

Such a lazy argument considering diesel-electrics share plenty of traction components with electric locomotives. Dual-mode SD40-2 conversions were found to be viable in the late 70s. It's so far from being a technical challenge, they just don't wanna make the investment.
