144/680: CHAINSAW MAN: THE MOVIE: REZE ARC (2025)

I decided that because manga are comics, anime adaptations count for this. Chainsaw Man remains the only teen sex comedy anime I have ever seen that deftly uses the cringe of it all to make a point about the adolescent longing for human connection.

Not gonna lie. This one is pretty embarrassing. Feels like a sitcom misunderstanding blown up into a relationship-ending argument. I suppose super powers are easy to buy, but atypical human behavior is a lot harder, because you can go, “I wouldn’t have done that.”

I couldn’t tell you why I like the Kyle Rayner/Donna Troy relationship. In the text, Donna isn’t written as much more than an adolescent heterosexual masculine fantasy. It’s something conceptual about cast-off heroes from their mythologies finding each other.

This Underworld Unleashed tie-in could have been really interesting… if only it happened *after* Mr. Freeze’s BTAS backstory had been implemented into the comics. As it stands, Fries trades his soul away to Neron here for the power to blast ice from his hands.
