Finished checking the page proofs of my pirate story in the upcoming SKULL X BONES anthology. Thanks again to editors @joshuapalmatier.bsky.social and @davidbcoe.bsky.social for inviting me to revisit Eddie LaCrosse and one of my favorite of his sidekicks, Jane Argo. Watch for the release soon!

When the Siren isn't up on her own for school, I slip into her bedroom, lean close, and sing this to her.

Edited manuscript of WHILE THE CITY NEVER SLEEPS is off to publisher. Copy edits are the next stage. While all my content editors have been fantastic, I've had iffy experience with copy editors (my favorites are the ones who try to "correct" my Southern-speak). Fingers crossed.

I realize I may be jinxing it here, but I just finished going through the edits of the big action climax of WHILE THE CITY NEVER SLEEPS, and I can't really believe it, but...I like it. I've gotten past my habit of overwriting and otherwise just getting in the way of my story.

Now onto the coda. 😁

It's fun when you forget a joke you've written and it makes you laugh when you hit it:

"He considered telling them who he worked for, but he doubted these bottom-feeding scavengers would know the name, or care. Saying he worked for Kefali would have the same effect as saying he worked for Nixon."

Showed the Siren, age 13, Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love” video. Her response: “He looks like a guy who works late at the office every day and comes home angry.”

It's spooky season, so I wanted to remind you that my most recent novel, DANDELION, is about what happens if those big-box stores that smother local businesses in small towns turned out to be actual hellmouths where demons waited to find people to possess.

I've always thought that if someone staged a rally near a Trump appearance, and on cue had everyone point at him and laugh, he might implode with rage.

Every October I re-read DRACULA. I'm five chapters in, and I'm trying to really pay attention to the conventionally "boring" sections. I always forget that Lucy advocates for polygamy: "Why can’t they let a girl marry three men, or as many as want her, and save all this trouble?"

No, I didn't! That's cool, though.

The next awesome volume of SUBVERSIVE SCI-FI is now live on Kickstarter. If it funds, it will include an essay by me on Tarkovsky's STALKER. Check it out, share the page, and help if you can!

I am facing, not writer's block (which I don't believe in), but writer's apathy. I have three WIPs in various stages, and none of them are calling to me. I'm still writing, because that's what you do, but none of it is good or progressing things much. Any helpful thoughts? #writerslife

I was disabused of my specialness early. Took my first MS (back when it was a physical thing) to the UPS office, and told the fetching girl behind the counter that, "Yes, I'm sending my NOVEL to my EDITOR." Without blinking she said, "Oh, you're the third one this morning."

I was showing the Siren the Barnes and Barnes video when the mater familias yelled something from the front room, and I got to say:

"Sorry, can't hear you over the fish heads."

Iykyk.

Received the 4K edition of THE TWO JAKES yesterday, and it reinforced my certainty that not every movie thrives in 4K quality. In this case, the weak contrast causes the black levels to look as grainy as worn asphalt. Blu ray would have been fine, and cheaper. Should've known better.

A head's-up: on September 1, the Kickstarter for the latest SUBVERSIVE SCI-FI volume goes live.

And this volume includes my piece on Tarkovsky's STALKER.

So when it goes live, please consider helping out if you can, and sharing the link.

My neighbor across the street teaches music, and today she had friends with guitars (like friends with benefits?) over on her porch to sing mostly 60s songs. I sat out on my porch, reading. It was fabulous.

I finally got around to watching Visconti's monumental THE LEOPARD, and who should I see in a small part but Terence Hill, aka Trinity from THEY CALL ME TRINITY. Those blue eyes are unmistakable.

Good call. You can't get some images out of your head.

Tubi has a documentary on the late GG Allin, directed by Todd (JOKER, THE HANGOVER) Phillips, that might be the most repulsive film I've ever seen. I mean, I knew about GG, so I had a fair idea what it would include, but I didn't expect them to...well...SHOW so much. Ugh. Ack.

The Siren (age 13), the mater familias and I went to the bookstore yesterday. When we got home and disembarked, the Siren asked, "Am I the only one in the family who can get out of the car without groaning?"

YES. Yes, you are.

Big thanks to @inkcapbooks.bsky.social for hosting SUMMERWEEN Thursday night, and extra thanks to the Siren for helping me read the opening passage of DANDELION. Lots of laughs and fun for everyone, especially the writers (me, Melissa F. Olson, Tyler Welch, and Christopher Micklos).
