I don't know enough about NES (yet) to decide what would be the best way to implement banking - on Game Boy larger ROM's have one fixed 16K bank, plus any number of switchable 16K banks up to 8 MB, which are just laid as 16K chunks in the ROM file. NES seems to separate code/data and graphics banks

Commodore mostly. There's no support for NES memory banking or binaries larger than 64K in Bass yet. I believe NES banking works a bit like in Game Boy, but there's a lot more variation in the mapper features, like option to have also character RAM not just ROM.
