I guess I'm just your typical Quiet American...an idealist living in a corrupted world and not always making the best choices.

i also think that it is only a matter of time before this court rewrites section 1 of the 14th to effectively end birthright citizenship. the 14th amendment is the chief obstacle to a legal regime of tiered citizenship and subordinate castes, and they will not let it stand.

Universities keep doing this. They have always done this. It's a massive mistake, & they should stop doing it & defend ALL the disciplines to the public. Look around. The case for more, not less, liberal arts research & teaching is stronger than ever.

It's notable to me that in Harvard's messaging about the value of research, none of the examples come from education, or even from the social sciences. I'm curious about ways to better demonstrate the value of social science research. How can we address this?

The University will not surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights. Neither Harvard nor any other private university can allow itself to be taken over by the federal government...

Vaping is our modern public nuisance. Every night at the bus station I watch who is vaping and stand back, knowing that they will hit it three times before they get on the bus, almost without fail with fellow passengers standing right next to them.

Market up, market down, market confused, tariffs, no tariffs.

Know what? Fascism is bad for everyone who isn't plugged in at the highest level and collecting. Capitalists should never have supported it.

Today in the NYT Spelling Bee I got "mood, doom, and drool" right in a row. Seems appropriate.

I just got confirmation that National History Day, a program that does more to ignite K-12 students' love of history, learning, and yes, even the United States than anything else I've ever seen, had all its funding cut yesterday by the DOGE-axe at the NEH - including for this year's ongoing contest.

You know that once Trump pulled this Liberation Day!!! stupidity that he had basically put himself in a situation where he had to do this. The thing that would have really crushed him would have been to not be talked about after his stupid press conference.

OK well here we are at what seems to be unambiguous defiance of court orders.
A kidney transplant specialist and professor at Brown University’s medical school has been deported from the U.S., even though she had a valid visa and a court order temporarily blocking her expulsion, according to her lawyer and court papers.

Trump's bullying of Zelensky is a sign of his basic weakness. Let him not get a deal. Go back on the resources and toughness of the Ukrainian people.

Likewise with his bullying of the press. He DESPERATELY wants the media there covering his every move. Report other things. Call his bluff.

JD Vance will reply to sub-10K accounts that do not mention him that his main account does not follow. He clearly has an alt, and finding it strikes me as a useful project if you’re a very online person who knows the terrain in that part of Twitter. Both for Kremlinology and propaganda purposes.

Timothy Snyder, On Tyranny
"When the men with guns who have always claimed to be against the system start wearing uniforms and marching with torches and pictures of a leader, the end is nigh. When the pro-leader paramilitary and the official police and military intermingle, the end has come." (42)
Maybe you could give them uniforms like matching brown shirts so we know they’re official

This has been my most ambitious piece of writing so far. It's long. And I will be working on a much shorter version for a wider audience. But I also don't want to lose sight of the deep truths lurking around us. So, here is The Plot Against America. www.notesfromthecircus.com/p/the-plot-a...

In a purely short-term financial sense, there's a possibility that Trump's trade war bluffing works, at least to the extent that he claims political "wins" that are largely illusory.

But in the long term there's only one way this ends up--with trading partners who don't trust us.
