I’ve given up on Britishness being a Scandinavian/Nordic style identity, which it could’ve been if England didn’t force its preeminence on other nations. The BB House hints @ what positive Englishness could look like with e.g. Teja & Farmeron. Start with not treating 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿/🇮🇪 as sad little hangers on.

It sums the prob. There should be independent English & Welsh Green parties. The Scottish Greens don’t really talk about Scottish identity cuz they walk the walk of being an emphatically Scotland focused party. They’re not tripping themselves up trying to preserve/revive an empire clinging to life.

Kinda peripheral in the scheme of things, especially with Westminster voting system. I’m also not sure about him. I don’t know if there’s more to come scandal-y wise or if that was a blip. I’m unsure how much traction they can really have since they wiped out in Welsh Assembly. Better than nothing.

If #bbuk fostered truly smart convos housemates & the public might be able to appreciate the diversity they represent & how their own systems fail them. Caroline’s ‘own people’ doesn’t include 3 of the nations of these isles. It doesn’t include POC. It doesn’t include working English ppl/regions.

There’s such a lack of leadership in Eng to channel civic identity to give ppl reasons to be proud not demand pride based on confected disdain of others. The UK needs hundreds of thousands of carers from places like India. The Scottish Gov plans to defy the English ban & keep sponsoring them. #bbuk

Not surprising Nancy identifies as Italian cuz in Scotland to be a Chosen Scot maintaining plural identities is common/accepted. There’s been 100 yrs+ of Italian migration here & there’s a distinctive Scottish Italian identity that’s so unproblematic she doesn’t feel the need to align with it. #bbuk

Relatedly I’m glad Cam K thinks English, Scottish, and Welsh people should let the North of Ireland do what they want politically. I’d expect no less from him. It’s categorically not the position of any UK gov’t recently including Starmer’s despite the first pro-unity majority in the Assembly. #bbuk

FINALLY, Jenny talks Irish politics in Snug Nights. Farmeron, yr partially wrong that ppl over here don’t think about it. I reckon most English ppl don’t cuz it isn’t on the radar. There’s more consciousness in Scotland where a lot of us also want independence. Also pls don’t call me a Briton. #bbuk

Teja’s point is precisely that you don’t get to make her entire existence a question. You don’t get to destabilise her humanity like that or anyone the far right is targeting. We don’t need to look at history books to see how the Nazis did what they did with mass consent. We’re witnessing it irl.

I was surprised at how she read the room. She heard Marcus out and I think appreciates what speed he’s on and she mirrored it in showing understanding. I’m not sure I agree with Richard she’s not mature enough to be there. She deserves it as much as he does. They’ve both brought different energies.
