At the same time, where it is subtle, the exploration of where Hinako as a character stands in relationship to these things, what's actually going on and how the struggle between trying to choose between what she sees as her only two paths affects her is played with perfectly subtlety and ambiguity

It doesn't mince its words about where it stands on domestic abuse, women's bodily autonomy or patriarchical power structures and thats great because its clarity and bluntness in addressing these things makes them impossible for bad faith actors to ignore or misinterpret

Exactly, I brought up Heather fighting a monster that resembles genitals in Silent Hill 3 or Harry fighting child like enemies. This isnt new but I like that Silent Hill f manages to choose when it wants to be subtle and where it wants to be overt at the exact right times for the exact right reasons

This is why I don't understand the people being like "its too on the nose" and comparing it unfavorably to Silent Hill 3, the game where Heather has a boss fight with a giant penis, is treated as nothing but vessel for a child by the villian, and foils a god ressurectuon by taking Silent Hill plan B

This kind of nitpicking bs critique of translations makes me want to scream. This people think taking out a word they dont like will instantly change the meaning of games when even a glance shows the translation is supported by the art design, character design, sound design, game design and plot

TLDR all these bellyachers are like that guy in the sub quest in LAD: Infinite Wealth who wants to follow Ichiban around believing hes a modern day samurai but is disappointed and even aggrieved when Ichiban acts like a normal guy and doesn't want to commit seppuku when he loses at darts lol

Its moments like this that make me so glad I was a late bloomer when it came to gaming because I played a lot of these games in my adulthood after they came out and thus, feel like its easier for me to let go of what these games "should" be and embrace what they are.
