Hi, I’m Andy, and I write pulpy adventure fiction, mostly sci-fi and fantasy. I was exposed to Middle Earth (the animated Hobbit TV movie), Conan (Marvel’s comics), Star Wars, and D&D all within a 3 year span in the late 70s, and I never recovered. I blame that for me becoming an author. #TBBChat

This will always be Mon-El’s best look. It’s just sublime.

The Marvel comics of the 70s introduced Conan to a whole new generation of kids. We would never have had the Arnie movie and the Barbarian Boom that followed without the comics.
ajfixer.bsky.social
Absolutely! The Conan property owes just as much of its place in pop culture to those awesome Marvel comics as it does to Frazetta and the Ace pastiche books from the 60s. Frazetta’s covers and those books reinvigorated the Conan stories and popularized the character after years of obscurity, but…

I still use that comic book to this day as a reference item. It’s just chock full of great information!

(6/ ) That rough draft was completed, cut in half (there was no centerpiece in this new calendar), and the part with the troll and orcs was used for one of the months. So it’s kinda cool how this piece came full circle back to its original form.
ajfixer.bsky.social
(5/ ) Years later, a new LotR calendar was being produced. The editor putting that calendar together remembered Kaluta’s painting of Helm’s Deep and asked if he still had it. Kaluta found an early version of the original painting with the hill troll and orcs in place.
ajfixer.bsky.social
(4/ ) When that calendar was cancelled before publication, the artist replaced the hill troll and his orc minions with Conan astride his horse and sold it to Marvel for the cover of their Conan comicbook.
ajfixer.bsky.social
(3/ ) But it wasn’t originally a Conan painting. It actually started out as a piece for an entirely different fantasy franchise, Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. Mr. Kaluta started it as a painting of the Battle of Helm’s Deep for the double-sized centerpiece for a LotR calendar:

Today’s #dailynerdpic is a multi-part deep dive into the history of an amazing piece of #fantasyart by Michael William Kaluta. It was done for the cover of a Marvel Conan comic 1986 (see the second post). I still have my copy of that comicbook!

Day 14: Energy/Power Stealer

Parasite scared the crap outta me when I first saw him in a Superman comic in the 70s!

RIP to Christopher Mills — an old-school bona fide indie comics creator who did it for the love of the medium, which is the only reason to do it in the first place. He was the kind of guy who makes artist alleys worth walking, and he'll be missed.

I only wrote about 100 comics in my so-called career, but now that I'm dying, I'm grateful that I got to do even that. Comics are such a wonderful medium, and they've always meant so much to me.

You’ll have to ask Woman-Thing…
ajfixer.bsky.social
Oh no! I really enjoyed his Atomic Pulp Comics, and while I never met him in person, I interacted with him on social media a few times. He was always very gracious and friendly, and very appreciative of those who enjoyed his comics. I am very sorry for his passing.

I’m not sure what Man-Thing Monday is, but I’m not going to argue with the guy…

Day 13: Nightmare

Rest in peace, Rob Wieland. A very sad day for the TTRPG community. 😢

I can’t say enough about the artwork. There are half a dozen full-page pieces, and almost as many two-pagers. It’s absolutely astounding.

New Comic Day! Just one comic this week, but it was a doozy: Conan the Barbarian #25. @jimzub.bsky.social really knocked this one out of the park, and Alex Horley’s fully painted interiors are drop dead gorgeous. Sword & sorcery fiction at its finest!

I thought it was really good. Definitely has the potential to be a great sword & sorcery tale.
