I am not an experienced enough writer to know whether it is my job to follow that logic and let the words appear on the page that way, or, if it is my job to wrangle it to my will.

I don't know how to describe it, but the novel I am writing is not doing what I think it ought to be doing. It's not going in the direction I think it ought to go. Which is strange, because ... I am the one writing it. It's like it has a mind, a logic, of its own and I have to follow that logic.

I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections
