🧵 This thread is a summary of what’s happened in the Chicago area in recent weeks as the Trump regime uses masked, armed immigration agents to terrorize Chicagoans. 🧵
/ A federal agent shot a Presbyterian minister in the head with a pepper ball at an ICE facility in a Chicago suburb.
There's also no chance this was written by a human.
There's a job posting for a Grok "AI tutor" on the American Economics Association website. No salary, benefits, or job security.

It's gig work for PhDs. Are we really doing this?

The scenes out of Chicago should outrage us all. These federal agents are out of control, committing senseless acts of violence & putting everyone at risk.

American citizens are being detained & brutalized.

This kind of immigration "enforcement" shouldn't be acceptable to anyone.

We need to keep talking about this.
"When [partisan intrusion] is allowed to stand, colleges and universities will no longer serve their mission of seeking truth, educating our students, and promoting the common good: They will seek only to please the politically powerful and teach ideas the government approves."

ICE detention is notorious for dangerous conditions, medical neglect, and human rights abuses.

Instead of using ICE's ballooning budget to provide safe conditions, the Trump administration is detaining even more people and opening facilities plagued with the same inhumane environments.
Opinion | An ‘SOS’ sign of detained immigrants says it all
Immigration enforcement can be aggressive without being cruel.

This is unhinged, dangerous, and reckless. At this point I don't know how you conclude anything other than that Musk is trying to foment pogroms against immigrants across the west.
Elon Musk spoke by video to Tommy Robinson's anti-immigrant rally in the UK today.

"You're in a fundamental situation here where, whether you choose violence or not, violence is coming to you," said Musk. "You either fight back or you die."
We’re frogs in the pot about this, I think. We’re so hardened to eliminationist, fascist rhetoric from the right that it hardly makes a dent when a prominent host on a major network suggests exterminating a large group of people. But he did. And nobody on modern Right gives a shit.
But don’t call them Nazis.

The one thing that people always overlook in our political discourse is dehumanization. It’s a feature, not a bug, of our modern style of political communication. It’s poisonous and endemic.

And if you don’t see it, it’s because you’re not a target of the dehumanization.

In September 1939, Nazi German started Aktion T4, a campaign of "involuntary euthanasia," to kill those who were considered Lebensunwertes Leben (Life unworthy of Life)

Around 300,000 people in psychiatric hospitals and church-run asylums in Germany, Austria, and occupied Poland were killed.
This is a pattern.

Leaders grabbing & abusing power usually start by unleashing abuse on the least popular type of person in reach.

With an appeal to public order, the Nazi regime early on abused power to detain & eventually kill homeless people.

Such leaders usually don't stop there.
