2000 crappy words into the new book.

My book, DINNER AT GOD’S HOUSE, was released on 4.24.24. And today, on 1.21.25, I started the shitty first draft of my next book. I only wrote a page, but a page I wrote. I’ve been thinking about this moment for some time. This is not the book I thought I was gonna write. Idea came to me today. LFG!

That time my very very favorite college professor (creative writing) called me from Hawaii to tell me that he loved my book and wanted to read back some of his favorite sentences and passages. Including when he said, “that’s a poem inside the prose.”

Guessing this call is probably happening if it hasn’t already…

“Hi MacKenzie, can you talk?”
“Sure, let me get Melinda on.”

I can't do much and it may not be much, but for the foreseeable future (at least through April 24th, when “Dinner at God’s House” is a year old), I’ll be donating 100% of my royalties to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) & other orgs that support the mental health of firefighters.

As we watch the first responders risk their lives time and time again, I’m reminded that this is what heroes do. Versus say, “make a heroic putt that wins several million dollars,” or attempt “a heroic catch.” Not taking anything away from athletic achievements. They’re just not likely heroic.

Just so devastating. And while I’m not surprised by so many of the hurtful and hateful comments about the fire — they certainly bum me out. I’m holding tightly to love and humanity.

Since I was last here — my book, Dinner at God’s House has been published and it’s won a few awards and people seem to like it. Beyond grateful for that.

Welp… guess I’ll be giving this another shot. Sorta failed the first time thru.
