It is a perfectly accurate description of some of the people I saw at the protest (and the last few)! It is also a misleading (and dismissive) generalization of the protesters as a whole. “Normies” weren’t there to perform; they were there to be counted and to engage in community

Look, I think we can all agree on the dictionary definition of performative while still acknowledging that it is often, as in this case, used as a dismissive term. I also agree with the OP that it’s a good thing! I wish he offered that praise without qualification.

Respectfully, if someone is calling out “feel-good performative activism,” he is not using the term as some sort of neutral descriptor. It is a dis.
