The image depicts a Masonic representation of Jacob's Ladder, which is a biblical vision described in the Book of Genesis (chapter 28). Jacob's Ladder symbolises the path to enlightenment and the connection between heaven and earth. The three pillars represent wisdom, strength and beauty, which are fundamental principles of Freemasonry. The symbols of the sun, moon and star represent the three lights of the Lodge and the universal nature of Freemasonry. The ladder itself is a symbol of the Freemason's progress through the various degrees and the moral teachings he receives along the way.

The magic circle. In a style typical of his work, Waterhouse depicts a solitary female figure in the centre foreground, surrounded by a blurred, unreal-looking landscape. At least one figure is faintly recognisable in the background, looking almost exclusively at the foreground figure. Waterhouse paid careful attention to the angles used, balancing the circle the figure draws around herself with a triangle - her outstretched arm, extended by the straight stick, is at a 25-degree angle to her upright body. The determined face emphasises the witch's power, her exclusion of ravens and frogs (popular symbols of magic) and her mastery of the pillar of smoke. Instead of arching outwards or being swayed by the wind, she remains in a straight line. A living snake coils around the woman's neck. The magical circle is similar in composition to Waterhouse's later painting Miranda - The Storm from 1916 , which also depicts a woman associated with magic. Miranda wears a similar dress to the witch in The Magic Circle , and her face can only be seen in profile. In contrast to Frederick Sandy's depictions of sorceresses, such as Morgan le Fay (1864) and Medea (1868) , Waterhouse portrayed his witch with an attentive but not malicious expression.

Atash Behram Photo of the continuously burning eternal flame, the Atash Behram, in the Fire Temple of Yazd, Iran, which is consecrated from 16 different types of sacred fire. This fire has been burning continuously since around 470 AD and was consecrated from 16 different types of sacred fire. It symbolizes the highest purity, divine presence, and connection to Ahura Mazda, the supreme Zoroastrian god. In the temple, the fire is protected behind an amber-colored glass wall so that it can never be extinguished. The 16 different types of sacred, consecrated fires that make up the Atash Behram in Zoroastrianism come from various professional and symbolic sources. These were individually consecrated with elaborate purification and blessing rituals before being united. The sources include fires from: • a blacksmith • a potter • a baker • a carpenter • a warrior • a priest • a brickworks • a corpse (corpse fire) • a lightning strike (lightning fire) This list is illustrative, as a total of 16 different types of fire are collected from different areas of life and nature, including fire from various craftsmen, kitchens, shrines, rituals, etc. The selection symbolizes a kind of cosmic and social wholeness that is united in the Atash Behram and is considered a symbol of the highest purity, divine presence, and connection to Ahura Mazda. The consecration of the fires can take many months and follows very strict ritual rules. In summary: • 16 fires from different sources (crafts, nature, rituals) • Examples of sources: blacksmith, baker, warrior, funeral pyre, lightning • Each type of fire is consecrated and purified individually • The union of all fires symbolizes supreme purity and divine presence This complex composition makes the Atash Behram the highest and holiest fire in Zoroastrianism.
