Wonderful, and cheerfully rude, with bums of all sorts gracing every page. I grew up in a place like this. Spending this bank holiday weekend in Saltburn This collection of interwoven stories is like a fever dream and Gummerson is an English Vonnegut. I assure you that this statement will make complete sense to you by the time you've reached, I'd say, page 6. What a bloody delight. This by @drewgum.bsky.social is so good - bold, imaginative and properly funny. Book a trip to Saltburn today @renardpress.com D madeleine_write Saltburn by Drew Gummerson. A collection of overlapping short stories set in a fictionalised version of Saltburn-by-the-Sea, featuring mermaids, a foetus museum, and a psychic piece of ass, among other bizarre elements. Yes, this book is surreal, but it's also a biting commentary on capitalism, war & homophobia. At its heart is the outsider, a boy who doesn't fit in, sometimes because of his sexuality, sometimes because he turns into a girl at midnight. It has some very bleak moments but also parts that made me laugh out loud. A great read if you enjoy the bizarre, and aren't squeamish about gay sex (which there's a LOT of) #reader #readersofinstagram #books #booklover #bookstagram

For #smallpoemsunday I'm sharing my poem 'Shortbread' from my new pamphlet, Circulaire 💛

Shortbread I add four teaspoons of cocoa to my grandmother’s shortbread recipe. The dough becomes terracotta clay which I mould into an urn, curve into the shape of myself, my floured hands sinking into its hips. There is something primitive about the way it folds like a bowl, then flattens into a tablet, fork strokes becoming language. I slide the tray into the oven, leave it twenty minutes to bake. An anxiety-hollowed afternoon is softened with this preparation. For I am a body, and I deserve something sweet.
