Congrats on inventing a large chunk of modern sports journalism and the entirety of the sports documentary genre.

I can agree that he's pretty good. But the level of clamor I saw over this guy testing at IMS was a bit much.

I'm glad somebody else is asking questions about all this. I don't get it.

I do not understand the level of fan and media excitement over Mick Schumacher's interest in IndyCar. I get that he's a nice enough guy with a famous dad and enough time in F1 to get "famous," but he hasn't won a race in any car since 2020 in F2.

Why is this such a big deal?
aaronstol.bsky.social
My cynical theory is that IndyCar is so down right now in terms of momentum, positive energy, and positive stories that the press pack is grabbing anything it can and, sadly, this is the best it can do.

I suppose you can only do so many "Roger and team may not know what they're doing" stories.

If MLS generates so little interest that media won’t cover it and so little revenue that it can’t pay in-house writers fill the gap, perhaps it’s worth asking more fundamental questions about MLS’ viability in its current form.

If this is where the league is in 2025, what are we/they doing?
aaronstol.bsky.social
Since I’ve now been asked twice about this… it obviously sucks that MLS is “pivoting to AI,” but MLS’ view of media is hardly the most important question raised by this.

Actual non-snark question from non-New Yorker...

Is daylighting just keeping streetlights on for longer, or is it something more comprehensive?

"Leaving Gotham and City Football Group for the Midwest is not a typical career move for a rising soccer executive."

30 seconds on Zillow changes that.

Only marginally jazzy, but our local RSN’s intro featured a ref getting hit in the nuts and throwing a flag. 😂😂 youtu.be/rBzdWoqtnac?...

2. The US team was non-competitive from minute one and people have paid too much/sat in too much traffic to just leave early. (Sort of a "game state" argument). We can't really separate the behavior from the non-competitiveness.

I'm tempted to push back a bit on the complicated interpretations of this.
1. Whenever the Ryder Cup is in the Northeast, it gets a bit hairy. Brookline in 99 was remembered for bad behavior even before the famous putt and subsequent player-on-player offense taking.

Still Drew Allar. Still James Franklin. Simple as that.

😂😂😂😂

Never mind. This is UEFA, not FIFA.

Haha, that's him. A secret Nazi merch shrine in his casino... filling the UND arena with Native American iconography in such a way that they can't ever remove it. What a guy...
aaronstol.bsky.social
This is tangential, but how familiar are you with the late Ralph Englestad, UND hockey donor?

Can’t recommend this show from @gregoryroche.bsky.social and @mlsist.bsky.social enough summing up the DCU omnishambles. www.buzzsprout.com/8793/episode...

Seems the least they could do.

At this point, isn’t there an “accelerationist” case to be made that it would be good for it to be as big of disaster as possible to possibly attract some league attention to the situation here and to how ownership is operating it?
aaronstol.bsky.social
Getting run (remotely) by a Turkish novelist/agent? What could go wrong?
aaronstol.bsky.social
Sounds like it was Option C here.
aaronstol.bsky.social
This is all good stuff, but it still feels like there's a big gap in knowledge over why DCU is so bad.
- Is ownership TOO involved?
- Is ownership disinterested and simply not resourcing the team like more successful ones in MLS?
- Is there an agent (overly) involved here?

Things are going just great for DC United, who might just be the most hopeless team in MLS.

I wrote about them -- and much, much more -- in my latest look across the league for @backheeled.com ✍️
