which is to say yr not losing touch with your humanity if you don’t have a visceral reaction everytime you are confronted with a horror. “hope is a discipline“ and as such so is resilience and building comfort with discomfort. humanity is showing up to combat fascism, not how you feel when you do it

when we talk about movements, we often equate “learning how to respond to a scary situation“ with ”normalizing and accepting it.” if i’ve learned anything from inside/outside organizing, it is that you cannot stay in stress response, in panic, in fear and also appropriately respond.

Another reason to mask at protests, aside from COVID safety and protection from doxxing, is that a lot of responsible documenters don't want to publish protesters' faces (esp without their consent) right now. Your face being in a shot may prevent people from sharing a worthwhile image publicly.
