Incredibly fruitful first day of my visit to the #UnitedKingdom, listening to civil society on important #HumanRights issues such as child poverty, migration, observance of the European Convention on Human Rights, protest restrictions and the situation of trans people

So pleased to have been able to support @commissionerhr.coe.int to visit members of the 4in10 Network @magpieprojectuk.bsky.social & @xlplondon.bsky.social to listen to mums and young people about their experiences.

Poverty is absolutely a human rights issue first and foremost

V. pleased to see @london.gov.uk making this statement in defense of rights of disabled Londoners

Children living in family where someone is disabled have much higher poverty rates (36% compared to 25% in a household where no-one is disabled in 21/22) - these changes wld also impact child pov rates
I'm calling on the Government to urgently rethink its proposed changes to welfare.

Analysis of the proposals shows that the impact will be substantial, destroying the financial safety net for too many disabled Londoners.

This sheer excitement at a helicopter landing outside our building today reminds us that these are not migrant children, nor children of families seeking asylum - our minis are children and A CHILD IS A CHILD IS A CHILD.🧡

New figures released by the government today are shocking. Child poverty has reached a new record high with 4.5 million children falling below the poverty line in the year to April 2024. This is an increase of 100,000 from the previous year.

New evidence confirms that migrant children aren't accessing the early years support they need.

A huge 40% of migrant parents not using childcare said they are or their partner are unable to get a job at all. Being locked out of childcare stops parents working and pushes families into poverty.
REVEALED: A huge 30% of migrant parents not using childcare are struggling to make ends meet.

Our new report with @ippr.bsky.social is out now and here’s what you need to know 🧵
