Transgender Awareness Week.

If you are reading this in the US, congrats on being one of a minority of Americans who knows a transgender person. By seeing our joy firsthand, and hearing our stories, you are more likely to be supportive of our struggle for recognition.

Awareness breeds alliance.

A11 My late wife and I had a nice conversation with two couples of a generation older than us on the boat to Isle Royale. I always appreciate intergenerational bonding, even more so since I've come out and cherish opportunities to be visible to people who aren't used to people like me. #ParkChat

A10 I haven't had the chance to do it yet - are there any parks that still have llama tours? #ParkChat

A9 I visited Golden Spike in 2007. I was working on a PhD dissertation on the Spiral Jetty, and the Golden Spike was on the way. I do sites whose historical importance is out of proportion to how much out in the middle of nowhere they are. #ParkChat

A8 I heard that Grand Canyon was at one time considering a light rail system. I like that idea. It would have less of a footprint on the landscape than roads. And it would mean that rangers can do ranger stuff, instead of traffic control! #ParkChat

A7 Hoverboards! Of course, since we're post-2015, we can get the ones that work over water. #ParkChat

A6 At Great Smoky, I was waiting for someone to vacate a parking spot, and someone backed right into me! I was sitting right behind them for half a minute, and somehow they didn't see me.

My solution: put the parking lot at the edge of the park, and MAKE 'EM WALK!!! #ParkChat

A5 It's not affiliated with the NPS, but you know I'm going to mention the Hudson River School Art Trail, which includes Thomas Cole NHS and goes to many of the places where this country's greatest landscape paintings were made! #ParkChat

Hudson River Art Trail
The Art Trail connects you with the places in nature that Thomas Cole and his fellow Hudson River School artists painted. The Hudson River School of landscape painting was the nation’s first major art...

A4 Trail Ridge Road in Rocky has some wonderful lookout stops, but just driving it is the heart of the experience. #ParkChat

A3 I would probably cite the Road to Hana at Haleakala if I had actually been there. So I'll give some love to Coastal Route 1 on the way to Acadia. So many quaint harborside towns: cute shops and eateries, and art galleries. #ParkChat

A2 I'm a big fan of trains, but I usually string together multiple parks in one trip, so it's hard to take a train to all of them. But I did ride the scenic railroad at Cuyahoga Valley! #ParkChat

A1 I think the last time I flew for a NP trip was from Albany to Albuquerque with my family when I was 17. My late wife were going to fly to the Virgin Islands to visit that park, but Hurricane Maria put the kibosh on that. #ParkChat

Thank you @myhikes.org for hosting. With a host with a name like My Hikes, I knew I couldn't miss this #ParkChat, even if I had to be late. And it was fun answering the first half of the questions backwards!

A10 Most of the hidden gems I've found are near the popular places, and I think, "might as well check it out while I'm here." For example, the Anhinga Trail at Everglades is well-trodden, but I had the Gumbo Limbo Trail, across the parking lot, all to myself. #ParkChat

A9 I don't know how many people are aware of just how many big names traversed those carriage roads at Acadia. I, of course, take particular interest in the role of Mount Desert Island in American art history. #ParkChat

A8 Saw a family of elephants walk right past our car in Addo Elephant NP in South Africa, maybe 5 feet away. It was late in the evening, so the other tourists had all headed back to the lodge. #ParkChat

A7 Mammoth Cave has a number of gorgeous walks above ground that everyone who's just there to see the cave ignores. I'm sure I'd say the same about Wind Cave if I'd have spent more time there. #ParkChat

A6 An oasis in Guadalupe Mountains NP. I'm scrambling because I'm joining late, so I don't have a picture handy, but I believe it's called Smith Spring. #ParkChat

A1 I don't know how hidden it is, but Robert Is Here near the Everglades is like a fruit stand on steroids. My late wife recommends the key lime milkshakes. #ParkChat

A2 I always like to give a shoutout to Hoge-Veluwe NP in the Netherlands. Free rental bikes, and how many NPs have a world-class modern art museum? All the Van Goghs and Mondrians your heart could desire! #ParkChat

A3 Lassen Volcanic. It's got geothermal activity like Yellowstone, but more recent evidence of volcanic activity. #ParkChat
