Introducing...
theunwellkingdom.com ‼️

I've put together a website to document this passion project, a fully homebrew set of Magic cards. Now you can finally browse them all in one place, along with devlog posts that go further in-depth into design, playtesting, and lore!
The homepage of The Unwell Kingdom, a website showcasing D&D-inspired cards in the style of Magic: the Gathering. The site's title rests over art of a gloomy cliffside castle, and several cards are cut off at the bottom of the image.
Very proud that the test itself went so smoothly, players were able to pick up all these new cards and get straight to playing! Really put the last two years of working on it all into perspective.

ALSO...There's now an Unwell Kingdom Discord server!! discord.gg/gfjzNeJ8AH
A photo of the UWK table set up at this past weekend's events. I brought my set cube of custom MtG cards, along with a playmat, stamps, a Fable figurine, and some art books featuring characters from our old D&D campaign. A mock MtG card featuring a QR code to join the Unwell Kingdom Discord server.
This past weekend, I had the opportunity to run a public playtest of my custom MtG set for the first time ever! Click through to read the devlog about lessons learned and the decks everyone built:

A thumbnail for the devlog article. It reads "October 2025, Sealed Playtest" A photo of the deckbuilding phase of this playtest. Everyone opened their packs and brewed up decks on a spooky billiards table, before heading back to the main room to play. A photo of the players slinging cards at the event. There were two tables reserved for The Unwell Kingdom, but the event itself had a really great turnout of folks playing their own commander games! Lighting at the venue was.... less than ideal. Here's a pic of a combo one player was delighted to find!

“it shouldnt affect Audio”
In honor of spooky month, share a 4 word horror story that only someone in your profession would understand

I'll go first: Six page commercial lease.
Does this count? I tend to reference my own hands a lot, which means all the characters I draw end up having long, scrongly fingers and extra deep nail beds!

Works well for wizards and goblins, at least...
An illustration of a pink-haired man holding a strange mushroom creature in his hands. He stares intently at the colors radiating from it. An illustration of an outstretched hand offering a small wood carving of a tree. An illustration of an old wizard pondering an orb. The underside of his oversized hat's brim swirls with distant galaxies. An illustration of a fist bump between four unlikely allies: a medieval soldier, a goblin, a pirate, and a skeleton. A green banner waves behind them.

The Japanese Mario 64 official strategy guide is an incredible thing. "Can we make little hand-made dioramas of all the levels?" "Sure, why the hell not."
A model of the first level from Mario 64. A model of a snowy level from Mario 64.
This vid inspired me to give Duskmourn a closer look after initially shrugging it off as pop culture reference slop. Very glad I did, as it's now one of my favorite sets in recent memory!

There is a keep, deep in the mountains, rumored to be protected by fierce warriors that wear dragon wings like armor. Some say they’re dragons in human form, but no one has ever gotten close enough to find out if the rumors hold true.
A knight with a pointy metal hat/face guard, draped in red dragon wings, holding an axe with fire at its top, and a small drake on its paldron. Stands on multicolored rocks, as flames ignite at his feet. Deep shadows contrast the vibrant reds in this dark fantasy inspired character design.

a spider can fly on a current of air
hornet drifting over clover and grasses
As I was watching it, the narrative structure reminded me of, like, a toddler making up a story. "And then, and then, and then" kinda plot
Finally, a "Who Would Win?" worth exploring
It's certainly no Puffer & Clarissa
BETTER GET READY, BUBS!
I don't talk about work much on here, but you better believe we're hard at work making this sound unforgettable. I'm lucky to say Insomniac has entrusted me with hero combat SFX, and this game is gonna have plenty of combat! 🔥

Stakes of Marika really set a new standard, it's tough to go back.
Trout is the name of our jumping spider who has given birth five times since we got her a few months ago.

dark type drowzee/hypno from greece inspired by kallikantzaros (dex entries in alt text!)
#pokemon #fakemon
Drowzee with dark grey skin and a fuzzy beige lower section. A single yellow eye is open. It looks mischevious.
---
At night, it invades people's houses and makes scary noises to give them nightmares to feed on. They nest in large groups underground during the day. Dark grey Hypno with a fuzzy beige lower section and mane. Rather than a pendulum, each of its palms has a red and yellow eye.
---
They lurk in caves, only emerging during full moons. They use the eyes on their hands to put their prey in a trance-like state and feast on their terrified imagination.
Always blown away by the vibrancy of @dirtcupart.bsky.social's art in The Chromatic Fantasy!! (just got my copy of Fugue #2 in the mail!)

The color choices are bold and unexpected, the linework is lively and delightful, and the characters are so so endearing.

Big recommend.

Was NOT expecting a roguelike. Wild stuff
Elemental Art Share feat. WATER. If you see this post something watery!
An underwater view of a sailor diving toward three beckoning sirens. The digital illustration features real watercolors for the background sunbeam and foreground kelp.
I always crack em open expecting to see the comforting grid of graph paper. Imagine my disappointment.
Also, we've hit a very important milestone! 250 of this custom set's 300 unique cards now have art! There have been some bangers this year, including some incredible pieces from friends.

Just 50 to go.
A homebrew MtG card: Consecrated Circle. It's a white Aura enchantment featuring very special art. A timelapse photograph depicts a handmade cat cleric minifig on a dungeon map, surrounded by paw print of swirling light. A homebrew MtG card: Duke Molto, Cartographer. It's a green creature that searches your deck for a land card. The card art is a royal portrait of a grinning dandy nobleman posing in front of his maps of Lyrea and Crestfall. A homebrew MtG card: Frost Dart. It's a blue instant that pings a creature for 1 damage and puts a stun counter on it. The art features Olly, the nervous wizard of our D&D party frantically freezing the head of a looming wereboar. A homebrew MtG card: Wilhelm, the Fell Prince. It's a legendary creature, and one of the few UWK cards that costs 3+ colors to cast. Because of this, I needed to add a new, gold frame to my card template. The art features an intimidating elven general in near silhouette, rearing up on horseback with the spears of his army climbing the hill behind him. The sky is blood red, and the Resistance sigil, a green branching tree stretches out behind him.
Work on The Unwell Kingdom has been slow but steady, with lots of balance tweaks in the past few months. We had a special playtest this month, featuring a mix of new and old players throwing down with some pre-con decks!
