Wow.

There is a lot of use of terms like "denpa" or "psychological" to describe fiction, especially anime. I think Key The Metal Idol is, however, one of very few things I've seen that feels directly pulled from the kind of highwire conspiracy theories you see on particularly dark corners of the internet. It is a paranoid anime. I mean that in a good way. A thorough breakdown of everything this show touches on is, honestly, beyond me---you may imagine a version of the ogre meme here---but I will say that any simple reduction of it does not survive a collision with its final episode.

It's a critique of the idol industry, one so blunt that mass-produced music literally sucks the life force (in the form of a pink ooze) out of people, but it also very strongly believes in music's power to bring people together (including the music of idols, just, only some of them). It's a paranoid thriller that puts forward that, actually, yeah the conspiracy theory guys are right---have always been right---about the moral character of the rich and powerful. I'm passing over a pretty involved series very quickly here, but the point is that it's a lot of things and a lot of shades of gray. Definitely a series I'm going to be turning over in my head for a while.

Also, if I had a nickel etc. etc. for every time a show revealed that its robot-like protagonist girl was plural I'd have two nickels. I have occasionally heard this show referred to as "Lain's even weirder cousin" and while I think that's an immense simplification, I get why people say it.

It's also stylish beyond belief, one of the best-looking and -sounding anime I've ever seen, and I think that adds to its power. Like, if the idea is that something has to be really powerful to reach people, what better demonstration than something this powerful? It's fascinating that this is, by my understanding, really the only anime Satou Hiroaki was the main creative force of. If you've only got one story in you, you'd be lucky to have it be something this striking and thoughtful.

(The score is never the interesting part of me talking about a show, but I think I've talked myself into bumping it up by a point.)

Anyway, when this came up in the credits I just about cried. Love you, Key.

Watched this as part of my ongoing project to watch OVAs and anime films and such with @joshhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I liked it! It's a very atmospheric and visually interesting movie. All digital too which for the time was extremely cutting-edge.

Essentially a number of fight scene setpieces strung together by quieter and more atmospheric moments, but it does both quite well. Also, seasonally-appropriate given the overall action-horror theme and the sheer amount of Halloween decor in the movie. Good shit, glad I watched it.

Also as far as the Blood metaseries goes, this is probably not a hot take, but I'm putting this well over Blood C.

Armored Core-like where you play as a transgender doll in a BLAME superstructure. Pretty cool all around and I enjoyed a good amount of time with it, but at what around is I think the 3/4ths mark I keep getting lost and the difficulty spiked in a way I found unpleasant. Unsure if I'll finish it--

Not at all! I don't know about anyone else, but for me at least I am just bad at retaining information. I generally have to look stuff up as I'm going and sometimes that doesn't help if I can't easily find it.

Having Gametora bookmarked has definitely helped me in uma in general though
