“So I guess I’ll see you,” Ed says, wishing he could jump out of the car and run screaming into a ditch. Maybe he’d say he’s chasing after his dog. That’s a thing people do sometimes, isn’t it? He’s sure as shit lost something, so.

“Mmhmm,” Stede agrees, and the silence once again crowds its way in.

Traffic remains at a standstill. Ed raps his fingers against the steering wheel impatiently.

Well. If he’s going to be too much, he might as well own it.

“How are you?” Ed asks. “Like. I mean. How are you.”

Something inside spills over, like a fountain drink from the convenience store with a faulty fucking lid. He feels like he’ll be sticky forever.

“Because, man, I gotta be honest, I am not doing good. You know?”

“I do,” Stede says softly through the car speaker. “I do know.”

mmmm i beg to differ, you are probably exactly the right kind of cool. i used to try to make this argument about myself and have decided to believe people who disagree, because definitions of cool vary and there's at least one that fits you.
