Typical straight white USian dude (sports, craft beers, outdoorsy stuff, history podcasts, etc.) who refuses to pretend I don't have it good. Philly fan. Militantly pro-democracy shitlib. Free trader. YIMBY AF. Trying to help save my country from itself.

I'm not really a Mamdani guy, but this is equivalent to a strong endorsement of his campaign for me.

There is not enough shit in the world for Trump-voting soybean farmers to eat.

Educators can't control what kids are exposed to at home, but they can control what they are exposed to at school.
xeynon.bsky.social
So it would seem you acknowledge the key difference is the education systems and not other factors?
xeynon.bsky.social
That's a fair point, but YouTube, Vine, Snapchat, and so on were popular before then.

And again, we'd expect to see this trend show up across countries if social media use was the main cause, and it doesn't.

A few years ago I saw a Volkswagen commercial set to a Strokes song, and realized my youth was long gone.

Right. He was considered a murderous asshole even by the standards of 15th century Spain, and their standards for sure things weren't exactly the definition of woke.

I'm not saying it's unrelated. I don't think social media is good for kids. But it's not new. It's been around for 20 years now. This precipitous decline in test scores IS new.

Tech nerds have an instinctive need to overengineer everything. Why use a simple, time-tested design that works perfectly and is virtually failure-proof when you can wire up a nifty high-tech device that has tons of components that can malfunction and turns the car into a death trap in an emergency?

I won't go so far as to say "nobody". There are lots of crazy people on the internet and they say all kinds of dumb shit, so I'm sure at least one internet rando said this at some point. But the extent to which it happened is definitely overblown.

ICE needs to be dismantled root and branch.
xeynon.bsky.social
I'm not sure that's true (I lived in Japan and South Korea and education is a big social cleavage line in both of those societies as well), but we're talking about younger kids here in any case.
xeynon.bsky.social
That's not new in the last few years though, and hence doesn't explain a decline from our own previous baseline.

I'm sure home screen time isn't helpful, but that's happening in lots of countries. Not all of them are seeing the same educational declines the US is.
xeynon.bsky.social
This is a society-wide phenomenon. Parenting differences don't explain it.

She got a whiff of that diarrhea-filled adult diaper and had to hold back her gag reflex until she could get to the nearest toilet.

Get the screens out of schools.

They can't even spell the name of the subject of the article right. Fuckin' amateur hour.
xeynon.bsky.social
People pointing out that an article you're endorsing is shallow, tendentious, poorly reasoned slop, or that you are failing to engage with the numerous well-based critiques of Bari Weiss' ethics, journalistic abilities, and professional judgment out there, are not "thought policing" you.
xeynon.bsky.social
Probably smells worse too.
xeynon.bsky.social
Bari Weiss can't even manage basic journalistic competence, but sure, whatever you say.

Some of them even blamed 9/11 and the Katrina response on Obama.

They are remarkably stupid, remarkably dishonest, or both.
