Minneapolis. YIMBY. Bikes are good. 🌈

In many ways, as a political nerd, these local races are very exciting because you never really know what’s going to happen and there’s almost no polling. But this is why I also hate it.
I can’t wait for the Minneapolis election season to end so I can have more capacity to mentally spiral about other things.
I have some time to kill so I’m just going through my phone deleting texts because I have “so many”, just like a normal human being does
Agreed, the food has been just OK and not always consistent, but I’ve always liked the service and vibe. I hope they make some nice changes.
While different, Nighthawks is closed for a couple weeks for a refresh. We went on Saturday before they closed and they had a food and beverage consultant on site. They are going to update their menus as well. The powerhouse corner of Nicollet and 38th is going strong!
Gah, then there’s this! Petit Leon isn’t aping the burbs; Lowbrow has done this FOR YEARS 4 blocks down Nicollet! There are plenty of Minneapolis places that do this!
Many Minneapolis restaurant owners are now focusing on value - not necessarily cheaper food, but meals that feel worth it -
much as suburban eateries already do. "Small portions at an expensive cost are things that we're trying to change here," said Travis Serbus, co-owner of Petite León, in Minneapolis' Kingfield neighborhood. The restaurant will close at the end of the year and reopen in January under a new name, with every menu item (burgers, sandwiches, shareables) around $20 or less.
This is why I still miss Koski’s presence in the campaign. She seemed the most interested in actually making city government function better.
Is it really true that there’s more bureaucracy in Minneapolis than the suburbs? I imagine that even in the burbs, there’s licensing/permitting stuff that can suck and take time. I would like to see more reporting on that than just a broad statement that’s supposed to be accepted as fact.
How many campaign yard signs can reasonably fit in a front yard? I’m about to find out.

this is definitely true but it’s also true that it’s only politically acceptable in this country to mock cities or blue states. mocking rural/red states is seen as elitist and out-of-touch, even tho most ppl live in cities! as such, i think these rare moments have more staying power.
I'm generalizing, but why do conservatives remember political irritations for so much longer than liberals?

It's been 17 years since Obama said some voters "cling to their guns, to their religion" and I heard a senator denounce that last month.

Obvious theory: Media ecosystem puts it on repeat
Imagine caring about Kaepernick in the year of our lord 2025
And all these years later, I’m still confused why they used “suck it lane” (which would be a funny name of a street to live on)
October 14, a day of remembrance in the Wedge.
Never Forget: Seven years ago today the Wedge was suddenly and deliberately attacked by bike lane protesters holding "Nazi Lane" signs.

Hard disagree. We can’t make up for past mistakes by just slapping the historic label on everything old. My house was built in 1902 and I wouldn’t for a second consider it historic. It wasn’t important when it was built and certainly isn’t today.
Also, many of you have more fortitude than I do. I avoid biking on Blaisdell north of Lake now. I just never know how many people will be occupying the bike lane and how much junk is on the pavement. So I go around it. Also, crossing Lake sucks ass.
I enjoyed Roper’s latest piece but I’ll be honest: I cringed and the description of “historic” homes. Like, dude, they are just old homes. Especially the photo that made it into the article. They aren’t historic and it’s exactly that type of language that NIMBYs employ (I don’t think he’s a NIMBY).
I actually think many republicans want health care premiums go to up for Obamacare plans so they can argue “see, we told you, government can’t run health care.”
Being the “adult in the room” means lying to voters that you’ll be a budget magician and somehow cut a ton but then once you’re in office, you realize that’s not plausible, and then you blame your colleagues.
The thing with candidates like these: they never really say what we should cut. They just insist we have to. All our budget stuff is public information. It’s not hard to come up with a couple million in cuts. But if you’re talking $300 million in cuts, that’s massive.
Things that make you go “hmmmm:” Liz Shaffer thinks the city should scale back its budget without cutting services…almost like she has no plan here at all
In 2022, Federal, State and Local grants totaled nearly $500 million. Now in 2025, these same sources of revenue will drop 60%, to under $200 million - a $300 million annual shortfall in only three years. We will not be able to easily make up $300 million of lost revenue without looking for ways to scale back our city budget. We will also need to work with our state and county funding partners to fulfill their obligations, as well as work together to protest federal cuts.

Should the city cut services as one way to address loss of federal funds and dwindling downtown tax base?
No
It got a decent number of YouTube views (although it appear to have plateaued quickly) and some nextdoor posts. But I don’t think it’s really having any impact on elections because it was too obviously one sided to be plausibly persuasive. I’ve seen more ridicule than anything.

More yard sign news: ex Ward 10 council member Lisa McDonald (who once told me "go fuck yourself", unprompted!) is displaying a Lydia Millard sign in Ward 13 — alongside Frey and Palmisano.
I’m seeing this elsewhere. People who want Frey are telling everyone to only rank Frey. They also seem to think RCV inherently favors progressives, but I don’t think that’s really how it’s played out locally.
Asked Mpls customer who has expressed interest in running for Mayor(but wife won’t allow), how he plans to vote.

Says he’s voting Frey and only Frey. Also says he likes how Chicago does their mayoral races. And that he hates RCV.
I had to stop listening. What an awful candidate.
I don’t know if I can make it through the entire Wedge Live episode featuring Demello. It’s starting with basically “I will bring back decorum” and then “if Dems aren’t moderates everyone votes Republican”. What an extremely dismal and wrong take on politics.
