Labour’s decision to increase English language requirements for migrant workers is legislation focused on optics.

All the data shows this is pointless. Government statistics show the majority of migrant workers already speak English very well.

Great to see our analysis in The Guardian live blog 👀

Our press release on this has generated a fair bit of coverage, but the most comprehensive can be found in The Independent.

NEW🚨Labour’s increase to English language rules will do little but reinforce false stereotypes.

The gov.'s OWN impact assessment estimates a negligible effect - a decrease of 400-1500 visas, or 2-6%.

These changes reinforce politics of division that arbitrarily moves the goal posts on integration.

A warm welcome to Matthew Taylor, who will chair the Fair Work Agency when it launches next April.

In 2021, Matthew was kind enough to support our #NaughtyList campaign to challenge bad behavior at work.

With Matthew at the helm, we hope to see the FWA crack down on lawbreaking employers.

This is one of the obstacles workers face when trying to get the money awarded to them by employment tribunals.

Our investigation found that directors shut down companies & open them up again to avoid paying tribunal awards.

This is not an anomaly - it’s an echo of the injustices we saw in Windrush.

A UK‑born child denied a British passport and asked to prove her right to NHS care is a stark reminder that UK policy still fails Caribbean communities and basic principles of equality.

Note the significant number of construction roles being recommended and the concerns about the existing sponsorship model not being a good fit when it comes to protecting people from exploitation. This aligns with our own analysis published a few weeks ago: www.workrightscentre.org/publications...

Climbing down from a position that would make the situation worse back to a place where it is already terrible, is not the flex I think the deputy PM thinks it is.

I'm glad the government will not introduce employment tribunal fees, but it's not true that "everyone, no matter their income" can get "access to justice" under the current system.

The barriers are endless & if you overcome them & win, you still might not even get the money you are owed

Last weekend, for the first time, we joined the Green Party conference in Bournemouth.

The party’s support for ambitious migrants’ rights and, increasingly, workers' rights reforms, may provide some comfort to those communities feeling abandoned by Labour.

This is a huge problem that @workrights.bsky.social have documented in the past.

Crook opens company, treats workers like 💩, shafts contractors of pay - and then when sued declares insolvency, liquidates the company, starts it again under a new name - and good luck recovering your compensation.

This damning investigation from TBIJ reveals just how easy it is for exploitative employers to simply ignore justice.

Company directors must be liable for the payment of tribunal awards or settlement amounts.
