After JD Vance disgraced himself, and the British Trumpists did the same. Feels like a good moment to reshare this Substack on how MAGA can create a new progressive British patriotism.

I dunno if you go back to a time when it was the primary source of entertainment, there are some that changed the world or the form.

Well this would explain a lot...

my latest investigation for @consumerreports.org is based on months of reporting and 60+ lab tests of leading protein supplements

we found that most protein powders and shakes have more lead in one serving than our experts say is safe to have in a day (🧵)

Gonna go with 'no' because a reboot is just cashing in on 'brand' recognition for older people who liked the original. There's nothing stopping a TV network/streamer commissioning something new that's about growing up today.

Incels need the Inbetweeners

The show is full of embarrassing depictions of sexual rejection. Could the reboot save teenagers from the manosphere?

Do think apologising for Brexit will be a bit like removing Clause 4 in terms of being a shibboleth you need to ditch to both signal to voters that you need that you get why they stopped considering voting for you, and freeing you from being shackled to something that closes down policy options.

Congratulations on becoming Head Girl.

Yes. The books I think are *brilliant* children's/teen literature as sit perfectly between childhood silliness and something a bit more sophisticated. There's a reason is hugely popular. Just became so popular created loads of effects that aren't necessarily good.

He'll say whatever he thinks a certain percentage of the electorate want to hear. People forget that he's only a Green because threw a tantrum about Richmond Lib Dems selecting a woman over him as a candidate.

I loved the Harry Potter books as a kid but there's an entirely reasonable case that as a cultural phenomenon has now done more harm than good. Not least with the interminable knock offs.
rickburin.bsky.social
Harry Potter didn't, in the end, encourage people to read, it just encouraged them to read Harry Potter.

I know the charts are dull now but there’ll probably be only 2 new entries in the top 40 this week. Where is the a&r?

Think this tells you more about commentary than politics. At the point this was said, the rise in immigration, Johnson scandals and inflation were all at least foreseeable if not knowable.

Which is why the intelligent question now is "Will Labour's policy platform work?"

It's almost exactly four years since Tim Shipman's notorious "Boris Johnson squats like a giant toad" tweet.

Seems like important context given how we often talk as though the next election – four years away – is a done deal.

Vaguely nostalgic for a time when our far right thugs were our own, 100% British rather than bought and paid for by other countries' richer far right thugs.

Elon Musk’s foreign interference of the day? Covering the bills for far-right thug Tommy Robinson

Isn't that all online politics? You even now get hardline centrists and stuff like FBPE because simply put, more hardline, angrier views are more eyecatching than "I'm not 100% sure but probably think this would be good".

I have an image of dwarves who all look like Noel.
worgztheowl.bsky.social
Do think there's a reason for this. In that lots of TV/podcast history is more about engaging the audience than the history, which if get a proper historian is often complicated and needs more length than the format has. Far easier to get someone who has some knowledge but can talk on camera well.
mrtrellis.bsky.social
Amen. If archaeologists and art historians and Eng Lit grads and medics and failed actors can pass themselves off as pukka historians, why not DJs?
sharal.bsky.social
Neither Rylan Clarke or Alice Roberts have a formal qualification in History so they are probably as equally qualified to front a programme discussing the history of Witchcraft.

It would save time if the OP just said they were a massive antisemite.

Just say you're a racist, it's far quicker.

This is also nothing new, is it not just "being a Mod" and every Mod revival ever since?

Hmm an article about how formal dress will save conservative values, sure would be a shame if the author dressed like shit

"BATMAN!"

"TAXMAN!"

Of course.
jondennis.bsky.social
I’m enjoying Steve Turner’s Beatles ‘66 book, not least the claim that Neal Hefti’s Batman Theme was an inspiration for Taxman.
worgztheowl.bsky.social
Yes, that's a fair point.
worgztheowl.bsky.social
Yeah, what I mean is that historic resentments and identity remain just that rather than becoming viable as a genuine political movement that can reach government. Not sure that reaches that without the Thatcher era (which extends beyond) making different areas feel like winners and losers.
worgztheowl.bsky.social
I mean fair, but parts of Northern England can equally cite dreadful bits of history but other than bitching about London and a few eccentrics and grifters, independence isn't a thing. It's more recent events that makes the past a running sore.
