You don’t need more ideas.

You need a better question.

A thread on clarity, chaos, & what a Nobel Prize winner, a mosquito net & a PhD meltdown taught me about writing (+ thinking) better.

From our new issue: "From Protest to Child-Rearing: How Movement Politics Shape Socialization Priorities" by Allison Anoll, Andrew Engelhardt, and Mackenzie Israel-Trummel. #APSRNewIssue www.cambridge.org/core/journal...
Looking forward to reading this. Despite being involved in many RCTs, there is always this lingering feeling that the (parts of) interventions we randomize and evaluate aren't the most impactful part of a program as it often excludes activities taking place at the institutional and aggregate level.
So pleased to see my paper out!

It surveys 50+ years of randomized control trials in criminal justice and shows that almost no interventions have lasting benefit -- and the ones that do don't replicate in other settings. 1/

This new paper is so cool!

It shows that the media use passive voice, nominalizations, and intransitive verbs that obscure responsibility in cases of police killings.

Because they do this, citizens are less likely to hold police officers responsible for bad behavior.

The 2024 Best Visualization Award goes to Masanori Kikuchi (Washington University in St. Louis) for his article ‘How does war affect cultural tolerance? Evidence from concert programs, 1900-60’. Congratulations to the author!

🚨 In the "The Gendered Costs of Stigma", we explore the gendered responses of survivors to sexual violence in the DRC, Liberia, and Sri Lanka. The use of #list_experiments shows that respondents need anonymity for sensitive questions in surveys.

We’re very happy you could join the workshop and explore Bergen a bit, too!
Stoked to be in Bergen for the @wareffectserc.bsky.social workshop ⛰️ took the cable car at 8am before starting my academic duties haha.
The #WarEffects project workshop is underway. We’ve brought together 20 scholars studying different aspects of civil wars, violence, and/or gender.
Twenty adults standing together outside for a group photo.
We are very happy to share that three young scholars will join the workshop: Yajna Sanghuan, Hüsne Akgöl and Francisca Castro @fcastrog.bsky.social! They work on gendered legacies of violence in Northern Sri Lanka, Algeria, and Peru.
The #WarEffects team is looking forward to our kick-off workshop. We’ll host about 20 scholars between October 9-11 to discuss recent advances in research on war and gender.
