I bang on about this a lot: I think the combination of a global pandemic, underregulated internet/SM, collapse/corruption of trustworthy media, plus now unregulated genAI, is a wildly toxic environment for radicalisation & mental health. We see the results of that in our politics & lives every day

Everyone knows at least one person (normally, but not exclusively, a guy) whose gone properly mental due to net rabbit holes.

We see public figures regularly go mad and destroy themselves.

And we have, at a policy level, just decided to put our fingers in our ears and go nahnahnah

Last night I heard of another friend of a friend who has been lost to a rabbit hole of online propaganda. We need to start treating this as a serious public health concern.

UK travellers to pay cost of EU border delays

Sure… just add it onto the ginormous tab.
And, while you’re at it, Brexiters, STFU about any Brexit benefits, sovereignty or control.

(iPaper)
UK travellers to pay cost of EU border delays

Extract:

UK travellers who miss connections, events or cruises due to new EU border control rules will have to shoulder the costs of delays, experts warn.
Long queues are expected at airports and ports across the EU as a new biometric system is rolled out for passengers entering the Schengen zone, including those travelling rom the UK
Airports in countries including Germany, Greece and Portugal introduced checks under the new Entry/Exit System (EES) yester-day. The system will be fully in place across the zone by 9 April, 2026.

I used to find it annoying but then I noticed the Irish use it a lot in quite a charming way

The problem
seamas.bsky.social
These very true words from Steve Hely have given me tremendous comfort over the years.
Writing a novel— actually picking the words and filling in paragraphs— is a tremendous pain in the ass. Now that TV’s so good and the Internet is an endless forest of distraction, it’s damn near impossible. That should be taken into account when ranking the all-time greats. Somebody like Charles Dickens, for example, who had nothing better to do except eat mutton and attend public hangings, should get very little credit.

I only used the non-algorithmic and it still pushed promoted tweets there

Agree. There is a lack of deep discussion on TV across all culture from music to literature to science. (except for a couple of periods of history, which are well catered)

I think one reason we have an elitism divide with the arts now has a lot to do with the reduction of proper documentary and discussion from TV. There used to be something on every single night like that.

Inspired by this fresh perspective. Thanks @wanderinggaia.bsky.social for showcasing the best of migration, albeit often driven by the brutality of climate change. Loved your BBC Radical podcast with #AmolRajan: www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...
