Power Rangers was probably equal in popularity to TMNT! they filmed new segments where American teenagers were behind the masks, but kept the original Super Sentai action.

i think the Super Sentai—>Power Rangers formula worked so well that executives assumed all licensing deals should work the same way. we've come a long way, huh?

it was around this same time that translatiors would also give characters americanized names.
yugioh's じょうのうちかつや became Joey Wheeler, conan's 毛利小五郎 became Richard Moore, etc. nowadays they trust kids can handle japanese names.
