New Bluesky people! Especially #booksky! Do you remember this movie, perhaps with fond nostalgia, perhaps with cringe, or perhaps with both (c'est moi)? WELL-- it was based on a book, Divergent. I wrote it.

But that was FOURTEEN years ago! And since then, I have written OTHER THINGS! Like...

📚💙🪐
a woman is looking at a man with the words they call it divergent behind her
Alt: An East Asian woman, Maggie Q, says the phrase "They call it Divergent" (the text of which is in the bottom right corner of the gif), and then Shailene Woodley, a wide-eyed white girl stares at her in shock

Remember, the coziness is only enhanced by the exposure to the elements, a la coming inside from playing in the snow to drink hot chocolate. That’s all I’m saying.

When people ask me what I think about using AI in writing I’m going to send them this screenshot
A screenshot of a post that reads David Simon, creator of *The Wire*, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro, NPR

And then a screenshot of a conversation that goes like this:

SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

Since it's Black Speculative Fiction Month, I thought I'd share a story I love by a Black author each day. Since I'm starting 10 days in, I'll post a bunch to catch up. I'm going to do 15 from the Top 80 of Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy and 15 from Lightspeed/Nightmare.

What sucks is not being able to review changes or comments (or track changes) for later drafts and editorial feedback
veronicarothbooks.com
I like being able to move scenes around, splitting the screen so I can see the old version alongside new version while revising (or an older scene to consult while I write a newer one), being able to keep research in an accessible place to look at while I write…I could go on

I keep trying to say things on social media today when all I really want to do is SCREAM.

oh, definitely "thought experiment" for Divergent! More of the "potential horrible future" for Poster Girl, though, which is far more grounded.
veronicarothbooks.com
I'm so happy to see this thought experiment vs. potential horrible future dystopian dichotomy articulated! Particularly:

"The goal of these books is not to portray a dark future that could happen but rather to amplify and focus on specific disturbing aspects of our society in a white box setting."
veronicarothbooks.com
I want to note that while technically my books have been banned, I am not adversely affected by those bans because of adequate publisher and market support, so let's all look for newer books by marginalized authors to support during this wonderful week of "fuck you, make me" vibes (banned book week)
veronicarothbooks.com
Checked out the list of banned books and Allegiant, Carve the Mark, and The End & Other Beginnings are on there (way, way down), which is kind of a weird assortment of my books. Why those and not the others? Unclear.

Anyway, have a look: pen.org/banned-books...
