Some bands can do it right, even if you can always tell it's them (King Crimson, Rush), others can make some classics but then don't know what to do to switch up. That's also pretty common for a bands best stuff to be the first 3 or 4 records, so it's not too much of a genre-specific knock either. 🤷‍♀️

Kinda plays into my concept that prog should be more of a mindset than a set sound...once you have an expected sound, how can you really maintain being PROGRESSIVE?

They kinda put themselves in a hole because of their early run that was so consistent but always something different album to album. When they settled into a set prog-metal routine, it just couldn't compare.

Yeah, it's really felt to me like they're setting themselves up for a crash, or at least a perceived one compared to this boom period. Obviously they're very secure for the foreseeable future, but the hubris is at an all-time high.
