Vespers

That moment when, in the failing
afternoon light, you suddenly remember
the language of dusk

and then you speak it;
speak all of its absences and shades
of bruised

and become a knowing
like that tangled in the skeins of the geese
that there must be a leaving
to make possible
a returning to.

Marguerite Duras. No other can conjure intimacy like she does—intimacy that burns quietly in the unsaid.
Marguerite Duras. Blue Eyes, Black Hair. Translated by Barbara Bray.

“She is sleeping.
He doesn't know her. He watches her sleep—her open palms, her still unknown face, her breasts, her beauty, her closed eyes. If he had left the doors of the other rooms open, she would probably have gone to look at them. That's what he must have thought.
He looks at her legs in repose, smooth as her arms and breasts. Her breathing is the same, smooth and long. And under the skin of her temples, quietly, the beat of the moving blood, slowed down by sleep.
Apart from the yellow light falling from the middle of the ceiling, the room is dark. Round, seemingly, sealing in the body completely.”

"Owl Witch"

~Natasa Ilincic
"Owl Witch," illustration by Natasa Ilincic.

Illustration is in mostly blue tones. It is at night. A small cottage in the distance has a light on in the window and smoke is rising from a chimney. There are stars in the night sky. The ground is covered in grasses moved by wind. In the foreground to the left is a gnarled tree, bare branches reach skyward. In the foreground center is a creature who is half woman, half owl. She has the head of an owl and the feet of a woman. Her hands are both claw and hand. She wears a long dress and a shawl.

Our hearth is swept. Ash grey without the deluxe sparkle. Nothing fancy. We will sit and watch the fire dance and the wind will make rude noises down the chimney. For the winter months this will be a magic place, love condensed keeping our hearts warm.

I hear birds on the roof. I go out and scatter seed, open my arms to them. In my dreams my arms sprout feathers and I lift into the air. I think the birds are whispering together because they are also in my dreams, waiting for me to fly. I scratch my arms and a small feather falls.

Portal 8. Staffordshire. Another unconventional horizontal portal made to look like a mossy grave. Gotta watch out for these ones. #tombtuesday
Portrait colour photo of a misty graveyard. A wall runs across the top third of the image and in front it is green grass with graves, and brown leaves on the ground. The closest grave is a rectangle of lime green moss on the ground. The headstone is gone. There are trees in the mist in the background.

Red Squirrels always looking like they're about to politely interrupt
A Red Squirrel stands upright on the forest floor, tiny paws clasped neatly together as if waiting nervously to ask a question. Its wide eyes and hesitant posture give it an endearing, almost apologetic expression, as though feeling rather unsure about interrupting.

the best poetry is as much magic as art, or, how john wieners said it, "poets are under magical orders"

The Twilight Zone fifth season ep 'Living Doll' is one of the show's rare tips into full horror. Miserable stepdad Telly Savalas finds his kid's new talking doll doesn't take kindly to his cruel ways. The script hints the doll would hate him even if he was nice. Creepy, malevolent, one of the best.
Living Doll title card, the title overlaid on an image of Savalas' hands winding the doll. Christie, a young girl long hair and a hairband, holds up Talky Tina, a plastic doll in a dress. Christie is smiling and happy. Talky Tina sat on 'her' own on a shelf, looking ahead blankly. The shot is half in shadow and something about Tina appears off. Savalas as Erich, in his workshop. He has Talky Tina's head in a vice and is attempting to light a blowtorch so he can burn the doll.

I'm so glad I decided to read it. The description sounded so blah, but wow. I'm halfway through and every minute I'm doing something else I just want to get back to my book. So so good.

Forgot alt text, damn it. It's me in 2007 sitting on a high window sill over an old bathtub in an empty bathroom in a warehouse where my best friend and I were taking photos. I'm holding a toy gun. The walls are white. There's a white shower curtain.

Ancient Woodland doesn’t mean the trees are ancient

It means trees have been there undisturbed for thousands of years, & at least since consistent national records started in the 17th Century

It’s the soil that is ancient

The ghosts of the dying & the dead feeding the living
Ancient woodland floor covered in Autumn leaves, seeds and twigs
