There was a poster in the lobby of my mixed-used office building for months with a phone number I could call to join Antifa. Obviously, I wasn't going to call it. But other people must've seen recruiting materials. I'm a million years old, they're not targeting me.

This reminds me of Katie Couric asking Sarah Palin what she reads. Some people actually vote for the candidate who claims loudly to be the most ignorant. After all, "they all do it".
I need a T-shirt that says "The "they all do it" attitude ate my democracy."

For too long, media has platformed bad faith, often paid right-wing operatives in the name of giving a fair hearing to all sides.

That should end. These people are mercenaries and fringe ideologues.

Nooo that's crazy talk if you think about it. Farmers use computers to manage their fields in front of a screen, first off. Second, the work that isn't really work tends to be sales and marketing: Sam Altman's specialty.

This man doesn't have a real job! He sells things that don't exist!
I just have to keep reminding myself that the world is made for people with no self-awareness. But I miss shame and embarrassment.

Ultimately, the death of US manufacturing is about this attitude. It's easy to say "buy american or stfu" because virtue signaling is free. But it's hard to actually sustain a business because many Americans simply don't want to pay what it costs to produce things ethically in this country
Someone on Twitter replies to me: "meh. buy american or stfu."

Two hours later, in a separate thread, the write: "$30 for a single button-up is ridiculous unless it is decent quality silk."

the actual story here, which the media never talks about, is that police in this country have become a discrete right-wing political operation. the story isn't about cops leaving (they're lying about that), it's about the police trying to exert influence over elections.

Lmao is this supposed to be a bad thing?
A tweet from Bari Weiss that says “"It's shaken me to my core," a lieutenant said of Mamdani's unexpected victory in June. "The absolute dread I feel is palpable.
"
Today in @TheFP our @Olivia_Reingold talks to the cops who say they will walk if Zohran Mamdani is elected in November:”

Trump is making fun of the Republican Congress, like he owns them, because he does! The sheep are so willing to jump off the bridge while he hangs back and laughs at them. Useful idiots, you are being used! History will remember you sheep.

For the life of me, I can’t figure out why the wealthiest and most powerful companies are hemorrhaging money to invest in a technology whose only logical endgame is to get us to unlearn problem solving and working together.

I tried to sound the alarm when all the journalists like me who went to state schools were pushed out. I said if journalism runs on unpaid internships, you're just giving the jobs to rich kids exclusively. Nobody cared, like at all. That was in the 1990s.

As a broader point, there are certain professions that entirely walled off to anyone whose parents were not in the top 10% of American income earners and journalism is now one of those professions. Reporters, especially for national outlets, look at those in the bottom 90% like they're foreigners.

There’s also another aspect of this: reporters are cosmopolitan, urbane people that live in cities. Many of them have internalized the fact that people like them are not “real Americans”. So they attempt to correct for this perceived inauthenticity

The psychology that twists coverage in Trump’s favor is transparent, once you accept that psychology plays a role. They want to be perceived as neutral by their peers, and they know their peers suspect them of anti-Trump bias. So they demonstrate independence by scrutinizing Dems and praising Trump.

Well he is actually correct in that Politico is complete trash. Nothing more than another propaganda outlet for his fascistic putsch.

If only politics was remotely like fixing car engines. But what we are looking for is creativity, not rules followers.

This is America as a business/corporation.

And predictably, it sucks.

We citizens are not the low level employees, because WE are the shareholders.

Uh ... BRB, I have to go reassess tech boy strategy in terms of playing CIV. Oh, I get it now, Musk thinks he can adopt Autocracy and then agitate partisans in a neighboring Democracy country. I hate it when the Mongols do that.

Is a lot cheaper to report on what people said instead of what is actually happening, and the NYTimes increasingly just isn’t the sort place you can look to for that latter sort of reporting anymore

A classic case of irresponsible both-sidesism from the NYT. The story is that Trump and MAGA propagandists are lying about Portland to incite a conflict, not that there are different views of the matter.

CDC has been a global leader in public health & played a key role in smallpox eradication. Health depts in red states & blue states rely on CDC expertise & support. The CDC EIS program trains the next generation of public health leaders & disease detectives.

They are burning it to the ground.
JAMA Health Forum Oct 9, 2025 by LO Gostin and P Lurie.
Abstract
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has long served as the cornerstone of the US
public health system, combining technical expertise, evidence-based policy recommendations, and high-quality health information. Yet, it is undergoing profound weakening by the Trump administration, including major funding cuts, the dismissal and resignation of experienced senior staff, and the erosion of its scientific independence. With tightening political control, public trust in
the CDC is diminishing. Undermining the agency’s reputation and capacities will reverberate for generations, making the nation less prepared for future health emergencies, including diseases of
pandemic potential. At this perilous moment, we document the current assault on the CDC that will inevitably have serious repercussion

It’s not the rabble who are post literate. We still read. It’s the elites who are too self important to learn about anything but their horoscopes.
patblanchfield.bsky.social
people online are constantly saying shit like "the average person is now post-literate and returning to medieval peasant mindset" while neglecting the corollary, namely that our elite aristos are once again scrying for angels, summoning demons, distilling elixirs of eternal life, etc.
