Thread for those new to BlueSky. First of all, welcome. It feels like a safer space, doesn’t it? But also perhaps a bit disorienting initially? Here’s some tips for getting your bearings.

Yes! And until recently I was the head of the unit so when the boss knits for your baby you know you’re not in trouble for being pregnant!!

Ada Lovelace used mathematics to design the world’s first algorithm intended for a machine. This was done decades before computers were even built!

Who is a woman in STEM that inspires you? 👩‍🔬🧪

Believe it or not it's a ruse to get me off social media in the evenings 😅
trishgreenhalgh.bsky.social
Keeps me off social media LOL
trishgreenhalgh.bsky.social

I need help, #knitting 🧶 I knit a bespoke jacket for all new babies born to my team at work. There's one on the way whose parents have said they'd like one depicting the Alps. I'm thinking start with grass and lake, do mountain range in snow-topped brown, add sky. But could do with a pattern! TY

I think one day soon I'll blog about all the repressed hatred about AI. A shrink would have a field day!

Thanks. Survived the pile-on. Reflected on the comments of those who were respectful in their disagreements. Blocked the trolls. Deleted the offending post. Moved on. LOL.
trishgreenhalgh.bsky.social
Yeah got a pile-on, which is why I left the other place. Am thinking.

Oh crikey of course I’m going to check it. How interesting that everyone on here seems to assume I wouldn’t!
trishgreenhalgh.bsky.social
Yeah I fear you’re right. The not-so-odd thing is, I asked it to come up with better prompts for the task I was getting it to do, and it added that. 🙄
trishgreenhalgh.bsky.social
Oh sure, everything needs checking but it’s a bit like power assisted steering in a car, no?
trishgreenhalgh.bsky.social
Yes I agree. Or “please get this paper from 5250 words to 4999”.
trishgreenhalgh.bsky.social
Yeah but I wondered if telling it not to invent DATA would work…?

I’ll tell you what I hate: it’s sloppily used LLMs.

The newsletter from agricultural producer news site WATT Poultry is now a primary source of my anxiety. H5N1 is exploding in North American poultry. Every day, a headline like this.

But no human cases. Either there aren't any or there's no testing. Given CDC's dismantling, I can guess.
Headline: "Avian flu invades flock of nearly 2 million Washington hens"
