I think you could extend that timeline back to 1953; the Dulles Brothers (with IKE’s quiet approval) started toppling one democratic republic after the next: Iran, Guatemala, and endless string of interventions.

This should mean the collapse of that party, as people who believe in the advantages of Free Speech, Fair Elections, One Person-One Vote & All Men Are Created Equal, abandon the party in droves. But, No! + SCOTUS
