It's become so normalized that nobody even notices anymore, least of all the media.

Some people never get the distinction between someone criticizing their views and someone criticizing them personally.

Other people pretend that they don't get the distinction, to avoid replying to the substance of the criticism of their views.

No, they didn't criticize you personally. They criticized your views, gave evidence, reasoned and refuted your views. Now you need to look at what was said, and see if you have a reasonable reply to their critique.

From the days of memorized phone numbers:
Our Apartment number: 730-0107
Dominos Pizza number: 730-1070
So every Friday night in our college town, we got misdialed calls for Dominos. On pushbutton phones, drunk people pushed too many zeros. Sometimes we joked on them.
I still remember both numbers.

Yes, it is true, back in the day we memorized 7 digit phone numbers. I'm sure I knew a dozen or more by heart, including Dominos, Time and weather, several neighbors, the scoutmaster, many friends, both grandparents, Dad's work phone, the car repair place, and more.

In realms with objective correct answers, they seem to reach and exceed human capabilities quickly, see chess and go for example. Without that feedback, or when feedback is hard to pull from the background noise, results are inferior.
