My nails are a part of my personality. Here’s a few of my sets from this year.

Because “my parents taught me to be strong” rings true, but they didn’t teach me how do be without them, and that’s the hard pill to swallow.

It likely always will, idk. I can say that my prayer for him today is that nobody preys on him. That there’s someone on this side of glory holding him together.

Many variations of “I can only imagine what he’s feeling from such loss so closely” and it just stirred it all up in me today.

I’ve been pushing back the fact I’m coming up on a year of my own parents because it still feels very raw.

This has gutted me all day.

“I am grateful for your thoughts and prayers during these very difficult times, it has been a very rough and sad year [..] I ask that you please continue to keep me in your thoughts as it will not be easy, but one thing that both my parents thought me was to be strong, and I intend to do just that.”

Same. Literal night and day difference for myself with a chronic illness and my parents as their caregiver.

So, it’s more than asking for our folks to go to the doctor. It’s teaching them the language, how to be confident in it, and dismantling years of medical mistrust.

Something that doesn’t happen overnight.
tinarose0103.bsky.social
When my parents were ill, the question I always got was “are you a nurse?” because I know how to speak the language. That alone allowed for them to get treated differently.

We hate to admit stuff like that, but it’s true.

BINGO! And why the current brewing conversation is about to fly left, it requires a nuance inclusive of health literacy. A literacy that the average person doesn’t have and must be taught.

An important aspect of advocating for yourself in medical spaces is having the script to do so. Knowing what to say and where to go next. Including having intimate knowledge of your health insurance or options if you are under/uninsured.

Family health history that isn’t shared, lack of screenings, stress, living environments, it all plays a role in our physical health. When we take into account Black folks’ understandable aversion to healthcare, this is the unfortunate result.

Years of medical neglect and societal impacts finally catching up, especially for Black men.
