Dev, artist, sometimes wordsmith and asker of obvious questions. I like the web, I like making things and I like you.

Not a prolific poster or creator and no plans to become one.

Trying Bluesky, liking it so far. Very purposefully taking it slow.

Maus always feels like an album that I've never loved but I know was super influential on bands I did love. I read it, it was good enough, I'm not trying to read it again anytime soon.

I've yet to read any Spiegelman where I came away feeling like he was the modern master his supporters like to claim he is.

He's not bad. Pretty good even.

He's no Kirby though.

My favorite Struzan story is that he was doing the poster for Indy at Disneyland, but they didn't have the rights to Ford's likeness. Fed up with working around the problem, Struzan just called Ford and was like, "hey, can I use your face for this," and Ford said, "if it's for you, absolutely."

People who try languages with a 'defer' keyword tend to overuse it.

It has a cost: The code is harder to read because it is no longer linear.

My rule: Only use defer when there are multiple ways to exit a scope, and you need some code to run regardless of which exit it takes.

The framing and colors were purposefully meant to look like a CMYK gamut comic book.

I saw the video of the guy introducing himself and he seems like a smarmy little toad.

That might work. Have devs donate time and a bit of money to keep a network up in a seeded torrent like structure. Even for that though, I would need a dead simple template. Either a one and done cli script or a page long way to host that on the cloud provider of my choice, or self host.

As for technical people, if there was an easy way for someone like me to run a node, maybe like a container run prn attached to some persistent storage.

If we can get an easy way for people to understand and work with decentralized information it might work. Telling people their posts, follower counts and other info could disappear overnight would be a damn hard sell though.

I tell my not technical brothers, sisters and what have you that the thing people must understand about us is that our fondest wish is provide technical solutions for social problems and we will almost never listen when you, correctly, point out that the world very rarely works that way.

Well, I won't yell at you for it, and I think you're speaking truth from a technical standpoint. I will say, though, that I think Noah is right on the money. Most people will not seek to understand networks or the Internet, even if they are on their way to the gulag.

I don't know the answer to that, but do know that that is definitely something you are perceiving correctly. We are often vining on a different level. Not above, not below, just a largely different wavelength.

And it's a real chicken/egg thing too. Are we objective technical literalists because we work on software or do we work on software because we're objective technical literalists.

We are (mostly) lovely people and we make cool and useful things, but for whatever reason we do not (again, mostly) always have access to that bit of common sense to keep us from saying tone deaf things like that.

It's a complete misalignment of perception between software folks and civilians. I can't tell you how many times I've needed to explain, to my fellow devs that having that X as an option in the settings won't work because ~90% plus of people will never open them.

Speaking as a software engineer, that's why I tell people not to let us muck about with other streams in the business. Don't let us market, don't let us design (visually) and for the love of whatever, don't let us name things.

Back in olden times you would be challenged to a duel for disrespecting a startup like that.

Last part I swear: supposedly this worked very well and some folks believed they were related for years and years.
