I am very aware of how lucky my family is to be able to homeschool. My kids are privileged not to have to deal with this type of daily violence. But safety should not be only for the lucky few. Every school should be safe. Every kid.

This country has to do better. These kids deserve better. (3/3)

Instead, he told me how absolutely insane it was that the other kids in the cohort were calmly discussing the lockdown this past week, when a student brought a weapon into their high school. He was just shocked at how they joked about the very real danger and trauma in a normal school day. (2/)

Context: All my kids are homeschooled.

My oldest attended a super cool event today for high school students interested in orthopaedic medicine. Still, the first thing that he talked about in the car wasn't the cool surgical procedures they tried or how he got to cast his arm or learn sutures. (1/)

Not an Economist, but there was a noticeable decline in houses handing out candy this year, even in our fairly well off neighborhood.

Even my kids noticed the lack of participation and made their own comments regarding the high cost of candy.

These state militias are small, but they do not answer to the President. Virginia is also a member, and state law authorizes it to grow quite large, which a new governor might push come January.

Every Democratic governor needs to have a serious conversation with their Adjutant general about the ramifications of this. Are states really okay with supplying people that will oppress their own citizens?

Remember that 20 states have their own defense forces that CANNOT be federalized at all.

BREAKING: The full Ninth Circuit vacates last week’s 2-1 order granting DOJ a stay of the district court’s TRO in the case over Trump’s National Guard effort in Oregon. The court will rehear DOJ’s stay request w an 11-judge panel.

Today’s order means Judge Immergut’s TRO remains in effect for now.

It should be much more survivable for Cuba. Right now it looks like this will be the worst hurricane on record for Jamaica and it'll hit a huge population in Kingston. Couldn't draw up a worse scenario.

Non-essential personnel and families from Naval Base Guantanamo Bay are being evacuated, and right now the track looks like a direct hit on the base. Mission essential and any detainees will presumably hunker down in hurricane shelters (repurposed fallout shelters) until it's clear.

With the US falling apart, what nation is going to help Jamaica? Current forecast is a direct hit by Hurricane Melissa as a Cat 4 or 5. Absolute nightmare scenario for the people there. 30-40 inches of rain is just... unfathomable.
