🌱 Milkweed care cycle:

🌧️ Fall/Winter – Sow seeds, mulch, let rain work
🌸 Spring/Summer – Host caterpillars, aphids, ladybugs & life
🍂 Fall – Collect seeds, prune, prep

Each year, your patch grows stronger—fueling monarchs & native beauty🦋🌿

🌿Milkweed Seed Pods & Propagation

By late summer or early fall, milkweed forms seed pods that dry and split open

Store pods in paper bags and wait until they begin to split before harvesting

Replant seeds before winter rains, save for next season, or let
nature carry seeds to new spots

EL PASO — a family says ICE showed up at their house looking for migrants and shot and KILLED THEIR DOG, then didn’t help them as the agent ran away and was not identified.

🌿Starting native milkweed from seed?

Many need cold stratification first:
❄️ Mix seeds with damp sand/paper towel
📝 Label & seal in a bag
🥶 Refrigerate (35–40°F) for 30–45 days

Then plant in pots or your garden! 🌱

(Don’t freeze—can damage seeds unless fully dry)

If you're starting Milkweed from seed in the Santa Barbara area, the ideal planting time is approaching

Sow directly into the soil before the rains

Native species like Narrowleaf, Showy, and California Milkweed often need a cold period to germinate, and late fall is ideal

🌿If you plant Native Milkweed seeds now in Santa Barbara County...

By late spring through summer, your milkweed will host a whole community: monarch caterpillars, aphids, ladybugs, lacewings, and sometimes wasps🦋🐞🐝

This is a sign of balance⚖️

🌿Milkweed isn’t just a pretty plant — it’s the lifeblood of any monarch garden

It’s the only host for their caterpillars and a crucial nectar stop for adults

Care for it well, and you’re feeding migration, boosting ecosystems, and keeping monarchs flying strong 💪#PollinatorGarden #MonarchButterfly
