Oh good, ChatGPT is getting "erotica for verified adults" later this year

We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right.

Now that we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have new tools, we are going to be able to safely relax the restrictions in most cases.

In a few weeks, we plan to put out a new version of ChatGPT that allows people to have a personality that behaves more like what people liked about 4o (we hope it will be better!). If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing).

In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our “treat adult users like adults” principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.

I've always been critical of the professoriate's tendency to dismiss entire states as unlivable. But holy hell, I'd rather work at Costco than take a faculty job in Texas or Florida right now.

Reminder: one of the easiest things you can do to support faculty in these states is JOIN A FUCKING UNION.

Returning students are the best. They've had enough bad jobs in their 20s to know that writing a 5-page paper isn't the end of the world. They know why they're in school, and they know it's costing them, so they have clear direction. Nearly every returning student I've had has been an A student.

It's complicated: No Child Left Behind, teaching to the test, high schools pushing through failing students, AI cheating, attention span and cognition issues from smart phones/screens, the disruptions of the pandemic, etc.

In recent years, this problem has gotten much worse. Grad distributions have gone from bell curves to bimodal distributions. Increasingly, students either don't do the work and straight up fail, or they do the work and get As. The middle ground is disappearing.

You'd be shocked to see what gradebooks actually look like. It is not uncommon for students to not turn in assignments at all, but to continue to come to class and to participate in discussions. Others turn in work that is so poorly done it's a zero anyway.
