Libra’s scales remind us that we dwell within an interconnected web, where every living soul is bound to another, and every ancestor lingers —
forever shaping the cosmos into being.
In Tarot, Justice is the card associated with Libra. She balances a sword in one hand and a perfectly level scale in the other. It looks simple. But it’s the result of constant attunement to nearly imperceptible shifts.
Themis is an oracle, and the Greek goddess of divine order. Her name means "that which is put in place". She embodies cosmic harmony. She uses her scales to ensure balance and harmony in the affairs of humans and gods. If Themis is disregarded, Nemesis, the goddess of retribution,
executes justice.
Justitia, is the Roman goddess of fairness and the rule of law. She uses her scales to weigh arguments and evidence in order to render a fair judgement. She uses her sword to enforce the law
In Christian art, the scales belong to Archangel Michael. He will use them to weigh souls on Judgement Day. As the leader of the heavenly hosts Michael also carries a flaming sword which can burn away all darkness and cut through illusion.
Only those with souls lighter than a feather were deemed worthy of the afterlife.
In ancient Egypt, Anubis, the god of the dead oversaw the scale in the Weighing of the Heart ceremony. Souls were weighed against a feather, which represented Ma’at, the goddess of truth, justice, and order in the universe.
If you push past the surface, Libra’s mythology is a lot deeper than the socialite, lover-girl we often read about.
